stormdog: (sleep)

So [livejournal.com profile] serinthia is working as a full-time temp with me now. This is good because we were informed on Monday that three people had started that day and needed computers and accounts ASAP. Normally we tell them they can wait five days like everybody else and I don't care when they started, but two of these guys are for our own department. Thanks for following procedure Mr. VP of IT!

Stupid fighting occurred between my mate and myself a couple times over the last few days. Worry about job stuff and not having clean clothes and about our Escort being about ready to shuffle off this mortal coil without having found a replacement yet. Bleah. I'm sorry for my part in it.

Speaking of money worries, I haven't balanced my ledger (much thanks to [livejournal.com profile] serinthia for a much more suitable term than 'checkbook') since the beginning of the month. We can see how well that checklist I was going to start is working. I should probably do that soon, and maybe even send some money to some people who seem to think that things like utility services and student loans should not be provided for free. Whee.

I'm twisting and turning in bed right now. Not because I can't get to sleep; my tailbone hurts! A little coin-sized spot of pain just to the right of and below the base of my spine. Makes sitting in one place for very long a bit problematic. I didn't even do anything fun to cause it!

I was looking at my Lingo VOIP box today and it seemed a bit...slimy. There was some kind of viscous residue on the top of the unit and on the ethernet cables attached to it. I asked Moira if she'd spilled something there, but she pled innocence. Then I noticed something in one of the unoccupied jacks. I looked closer; a piece of cat food, and more of it on the table behind the box. I had made a cat food mess in the computer room last night and some must have gotten up there. Which means that the viscous residue is almost certainly dog slobber left over from Kuma trying to get to the kibble. I'll have to disconnect it and clean it off tomorrow.

Looking on Ebay and on Craig's List for wash machines that cost less than the part I need for mine ($70). No luck yet. This is why I washed clothes at my parents' house tonight.

Speaking of my parents' house, I was there for the celebration of my youngest brother's eighteenth birthday party tonight, which is one day before the actual date but occurred today to match our schedule of having dinner all together on Tuesdays. It's always good to see my family again, though it's really odd to think of my brother being that old. To my he'll always be ten or twelve, and the middle brother of the group of us, now a couple years into college, will always be fourteen or fifteen. *sighs* I miss spending endless summer days playing video games and staying up all night with them.

I continue to notice myself gaining weight. Just a little bit here and there, hardly noticeable at any one time, but it adds up. It's not that I don't like the way I look; I don't have a problem with a little bit of a tummy and Moira takes great pains to keep telling me how good I look, despite the fact that I don't quite believe I'm all that attractive. But I do want to be able to play DDR for an hour and not be so winded or have the kind of ankle pain that I do. It's just so hard to exercise regularly with the kind of schedule I have. I think about trying to do the Hacker's Diet, but I'm sure I'd make Andrea nuts if I asked her to measure the calories in the food she makes.

Moira's job search has been going swimmingly; she's had a few interviews already and more coming up, including one for the place literally right next door to where I work. Wish her luck!

Realized that the reason behind my trouble connecting to my home network via VPN from Todd and Serin's apartment (after setting their router to allow PPTP traffic) is that my router is not handing out my DNS server's address in DHCP, so when I look for systems by my internal network names for them it gets confused, and when I look by IP address the packet never leaves the network because both mine and theirs are the 192.168.0 network. My router is, of course, just handing out the settings that it pulls down from my ISP, which do not include my own DNS server. That's too bad, as it would easily clear up the confusion. Experimented with disabling DHCP on the router and creating a DHCP scope on my domain controller, but could not get my laptop to pull an IP address from it. Further experimentation is required. In the meantime, turned the functionality back on on the router.

Got my Proliant behemoth up and running with an install of Windows 2000 Advanced Server that, fifty three Microsoft patches later, is up to date. Will install Symantec Backup Exec when I have time using the key generator that I got from one of our network guys. I will then start using the 160+GB, 6 drive RAID-5 array as offline storage to back up my other systems, and possibly install a Travan tape drive in the machine to archive to tape. Or I'll just use the DLT drive that's already on it, though I don't know how much those tapes would cost me, and I certainly can't afford to buy any now anyway. Travans I have plenty of, albeit used and of questionable quality.

Had [livejournal.com profile] posicat up to the house to look at his van. We decided that whatever is wrong with it doesn't seem to be a wheel bearing, and is most likely somewhere around where the drive axle connects to the transmission and is probably beyond our skill to repair. *sighs* I wish I could do more, but I really only seem like I know what I'm doing when it comes to cars.

Still, the trip up wasn't wasted as we got together with Serin again for most of the last movie of her eleven-hour Lord of the Rings extended version movie marathon. Yay!

I guess that's really about it for now. I should be off to sleep. Lots more stupid to deal with tomorrow....
