Music and stuff.
Feb. 20th, 2003 08:22 amIt occurs to me how static my concept of music must be compared to that of, perhaps, primitive people. Sure I have a lot of variety. I have 5 gigs of MP3's. I have music of more styles and genres than I can think of offhand, yet every 'performance' is the same as the one before. Every time I listen to a song I've heard before, I know exactly what I'm going to hear. I love music. Music touches me in a special way all it's own, but I wonder how much I am missing. Long ago, though really not so terribly long, when all music was live, what was it like to know that everytime you hear music it is a unique experience, crafted by it's occasion, just for you and the others listening? To listen to music that
isn't even planned out in advance, just spontaneously formed by those making it, is an experience that I cannot put into words. When I was at the national Rainbow Gathering, there were people in spontaneous groups all over playing drums or musical bowls, or digeridoos, or sittars... It was really, really neat. There were a couple of drum circles that I got entirely absorbed in. I just sat and listened to them, and it was almost hypnotic. That's something that's missing from recorded music. I miss it.
I wish it wasn't so late when I get home. It's late enough that I just don't feel like turning on Trillian, so I apologize for not being on IM at all. If anybody's looking for me. Heh. I always end up staying up longer than I plan to. I don't even know why I started writing about music. Sometimes you just have to do something. 'So it goes.'
Been reading a couple of short stories in my spare time at work. They are in something called Black Gate magazine, which is a sci-fi and fantasy short story mag, I gather. I just happened to look at it 'cause Kenzerco publishes it and there are some copies sitting around. Huh, I didn't know that. But anyway, some of the stuff in there is really good! And there are even a couple with a definate anthro/furry element. Cool! Maybe someday I'll try submitting something, if I ever get my brain together and write something again.
*grumble grumble* Someone played with my primary computer and diabled my secondary monitor, and, much worse, installed quicktime, which I had been studiously avoiding installing. Now it's sittin' in my task bar and I have to go dig through windows and make it go away. And of course, no one claims to have used my computer today. Definitely not. My brothers would neeeeever do that......
Hmm, tried to post this last night, but LJ seems to have been down. Oh well.
