Apr. 27th, 2004 10:20 pmI hate working overtime.
I used to think that I wouldn't mind it so much when it's on the weekdays because that way I don't miss any time at home with Andrea, whereas on the weekends I miss a full 9 hours. That's still true. I'm just liking overtime in general less. The simple fact is that my time, time that I use to clean up, to work on my computer, to write in my livejournal, to just relax, is worth more to me than the $12.60 an hour I'm being paid for it. Especially at just two extra hours a day. That's two whole hours I'm giving up out of my day for twenty five bucks. *sigh* In all honesty, I suppose that's not too bad. I just want more time.
I worked late today and probably will tomorrow as well. CBI is open late all this week and Saturday too, but I'm certainly not going in on Saturday, and hopefully not on Friday either. My raccoon and I have plans. Plans which, I will simply note, I am very excited about.
I have plans for Thursday too, but they are of a less exciting nature. I have to bring the blue beast to the auto shop. Yes, it seems that the old Olds has been granted a reprieve, behind which there is something of a story. My star and I spent a long, tiring, and stressful weekend hunting for cars. We found a few (including a beautiful 1974 BMW 2002 that we very nearly decided to buy but that's another story) that made likely candidates and I finally decided on a pretty '88 Sunbird going for $900. A pretty good deal. Too good it seems, since when I called at lunch on Monday to confirm my coming by to get it checked by a mechanic, it had been sold out from under me. I can't blame the owner; cold hard cash now vs. possible cash if I showed up and if the mechanic approved the car.
I returned home after work on Monday intending to comb papers for car ads. Suddenly, it occurred to me that I should call up my regular (regular being used loosely here since I've had him work on my car a grand total of one time) mechanic and get his opinion. (We went to a different one the first time hoping we'd get a better deal paying with trade dollars through my beloved.) The result; he'll do the motor mounts, tune up, plugs and wires, and distributor if necessary, for probably under $300. Paying by trade or not, next time I'm just going to him first.
In the meantime, I have to drive the beast for another couple days and hope my engine doesn't fall out. I think she'll get me through. She's not the type to give up easy.
The weekend was so stressful and it just hasn't let up. From Andrea coming home and being terribly stressed by work yesterday to me being unable to start my car this morning and getting to work late (diagnosis; the vibrations of the engine due to the bad motor mounts had worked the battery cables loose), things have been just crazy. But I think things will get better from here on. I hope. My beloved and I are going to relax and watch a movie (or maybe part of one depeding on how we feel) after we're done puttering with our respective computer thingys, and we'll snuggle up and go to bed... *happy sigh*
Speaking of computer thingys, *Warning: geek stuff* I finally got my XP3000 up and running. It feels so cool to have a 2.1Ghz computer at my disposal. The fan is, as I said, a little loud, but I can live with that. What's really bugging me is the implementation of the multiple monitor feature of the Radeon 7500 I have under the Windows 2000 (I updated my OS since I have 512MB of physical memory and I was worried about related issues with Windows 98) driver. It sucks! I'm not quite sure how to explain the issue though. Instead of each monitor being it's own chunk of 'real estate' (i.e. the Start bar was limited to one monitor, when you maximized a window it would expand to fill just one monitor, etc.), the desktop now sprawls wantonly across both of them (i.e. the Start bar goes across the bottom of both monitors so I have to look way over left to see my clock, and when I maximize a window it covers both monitors which is almost entirely useless unless I'm using a spread sheet or somthing). I'm dealing with it by just moving and resizing windows by hand all the time, but it's kind of annoying and I'm tempted to write an annoyed letter to ATI. Has any one had experience with this? Are there any old driver versions that perhaps don't behave in this absurd fashion?
Well, that's about it for now. More as life continues...
