Jan. 10th, 2005 07:06 amThere was something I was going to write as an opener for this entry. It was in my head last night as I fell asleep around 12:30 in the morning (I need to stop staying up that late), but I can't remember what it was. So I'll start with something else.
Andrea and I went out to a couple of new flea markets yesterday. I woke up early, spent a little time playing games and cleaning up and then, after Andrea rolled out of bed, I told her about the odd yearning I felt to explore mounds of random used junk. We googled appropriately and, to my surprise, found two flea markets right in our own city that we hadn't been to before.
We explored both of them of course. We ended up with a few interesting finds: I picked up a 40 piece tap and die set for a dollar (even with half of the dies rusted to unusability it was a steal!) and a book with information about wild growing green things in the city (aka weeds). I saw, but passed on, an actual thinnet (10base2) ethernet hub. First one I'd ever seen and it would be kind of fun to make art out of or something but it was ridiculously priced ($15) for something that is, for all practical purposes, entirely useless. There were also very pretty shirts with wolf designs that I might go back for someday. They didn't have the one I wanted in my size at the time.
Andrea found a few cookbooks. She intends, once the week's out and she has some time to herself, to cook essentially everyday. She's a wonderful cook and I look forward to it. My culinary preparation skills are limited to frozen pizza and, at the top of my skill range, grilled cheese sandwiches.
Saturday was lots of fun as well. First stop was getting an eye exam, picking out frames, and ordering my new glasses. (I do, by the way, have a picture of the temporary repairs on my current frames that I will probably post here tonight.) The ones I picked out are much thinner and more squarish than the ones I have now and that makes an interesting change for me. Growing up, I always wanted a pair of perfectly round frames. Every pair of glasses I've had in the past have been, essentially, a best approximation of that ideal since, apparently, no one makes perfectly round frames. I'd been thinking about trying something different though and, with Andrea's input, I picked out something rather different that I think I rather like.
After that, we hit a Chinese buffet for lunch. Not a particularly good one. The fried dumplings looked a touch undercooked to both Andrea and myself, though after another batch was brought out they seemed ok. Both the (unusually large) sesame balls and the crab rangoons were entirely outstanding though.
A circuit of thrift stores followed. Two of the day's finds stand out in my memory. First was two copies (different editions) of The Victrola Book of the Opera, one with the original hard slip-case. These are '20s books published by the Victor Talking Machine Corporations to advertise their line of operatic recordings. They are stuffed with vintage pictures of grand opera houses of the day and have the plots of, and excerpts from, some seventy or eighty great operas. Very neat books and in remarkable condition too.
Second was a plasma globe. One of those glass spheres with a little central cathode (is that the right term? I don't know these things as well as I'd like) that, once the device is turned on, produces flaming streamers of plasma that reach out to lick the transparent enclosure. I've wanted one of these for years and was quite surprised to find one at a thrift store not only in perfect working order, but for less than ten bucks. I laid in bed staring at it last night 'till Andrea came in to join me. It's oddly soothing.
What else is going on? I'm doing lots of studying still. One of the practice PDFs I have has over 250 questions and i'm working my way through it both at home and between calls at work. I've vowed to finish it and look at my other materials this week and then schedule my test. After going through as much as I have, I feel fairly confident. I think I actually know this stuff.
Work is already dragging today. I think it's just because I'm so tired though. With my time between calls occupied by something that I really focus on things seem to go a lot faster. I may nap when I get home. *yawns* I just don't want the weekend to be over.
I have another thing to write about regarding this weekend but it's not something I can write about at work. *smirks* Maybe I'll do that tonight too. I just need to go through our stack of mail first...
