Wow.

I am envious of [livejournal.com profile] edbook. He's been posting a serious of gorgeous photos he's taken through the deserts of the southwest United States. I hope someday I have a chance to a few things like that.

Speaking of which, I need to sort out all the pictures I took of the machinery in the basement of the Rhode Opera House. There's some really pretty stuff there and I need to get it up in [livejournal.com profile] deadmachinery. Maybe I'm not at leisure to drive around the country and borrow from nature the kind of fantastic things Ed does, but there's a stark beauty to be found in the city too. I want to do a lot more photography and exploring after the move, when things have settled down.

The weekend I took the pictures was the weekend of Congenial. There was a lot of really good stuff that weekend that, with the craziness of the past week, I haven't been able to write about.

As Andrea mentioned in her journal, there was the time spent at the Rhode where I got to chat with one of the people I used to work with a great deal. She's an unbelievably motivated woman named Judy Rossow and she's kept that theatre alive over the last several years out of sheer willpower. I am so looking forward to working with her and the theatre again. She's done so much for the building; when I saw how beautiful the next door gallery she's restored was and as I watched the workman who was in the building patching the long-flaking paint and plaster in the lobby I almost started crying. It's so beautiful...

The con was wonderful. It's been a while and Andrea covered most things in her journal anyway, so I won't be detailed about it. It was a wonderful time spent with good friends. There was lots of relaxing and snuggling and good food. On Saturday, Andrea and I took [livejournal.com profile] tincrash to see the house we had just signed the lease on (our first house-guest!) and to get Chinese buffet that Tin sneakily managed to pay for while Andrea was in the bathroom. Thank you Tin! Then, on Sunday, [livejournal.com profile] lisagems said something very beautiful to me while I was being slightly mopey about the end of the con and other things.

Other things; well, to be honest, I was comparing myself to many of the people there and finding myself wanting. As someone who grew up with a nearly single-minded goal of going through school, getting multiple degrees, and becoming a scientist (exactly what kind of scientist I was kind of fuzzy on, but I knew I was going to be a scientist or engineer or something), it was tough to see people about my age who had multiple degrees and were scientists. I was feeling inadequate.

It's true that things were different for me than I had planned. I had a lot of trouble with school for a lot of reasons and, really, all considered, have done a lot better than I might have I suppose. I'm aware of all that but it didn't seem like much comfort at the time. What was was [livejournal.com profile] lisagems simply telling me that 'the truest mirror is the eyes of your friends'. *sniffles* I have such good friends.

Finally, after a wonderful Monday morning breakfast with my parents, we were off to Michigan again. I miss our family, our friends, and our new little house. Of course, I'll miss our Michigan friends too after we move. Why can't all the good people all be in one place?

Not much else to say. Work is work. At least our volume is low today. I think, with talk about the kind of photography I want to be doing fresh in my mind, I'm going to go check out forgottenmichigan.com. It would be so cool if I could start a site like that for Chicago or Milwaukee...
