Dec. 14th, 2005 08:49 pmThe latest news:
My laptop seems to have choked and died, so at the moment I've lost access to email again. I've been thinking about switching to Thunderbird since I've been having a few niggling problems with Pegasus Mail that they promise to fix in the next update, which I've pretty much given up on holding my breath for. I feel bad moving away from a program that I've used for so long and has been around for so long, but I will certainly consider going back to it if the functionality I'm looking for is there. Anyway, I downloaded the install package for Thunderbird and tucked it away on the utils share on my fileserver. I shortly realized that I was going to have to get back to addressing my disk storage problem on my primary machine that I'd forgotten about since I don't have enough room to unpack the install package on my C drive. Oops. This just give me even more incentive to finally get my Babylon Five stuff burned to disk so that I have enough room on my server to back everything else up while I reinstall 2000 on my primary machine.
In theory, I wouldn't have to back everything up; I'd just do my OS partition and leave all my data alone. However, now that I was fooled by Microsoft into thinking that I could just make my partitions dynamic and then resize them on the fly (I can't, and now because they are all in that proprietery 'dynamic' form, I don't think anything else will touch them), I can't wipe one out without doing all of them. *grumps* So, I will hopefully soon have an emptier hard drive and an impressive stack of CDs full of sci-fi.
I just replaced the simply awful HP Photosmart 7260 (a printer that I have had nothing but trouble with: the hardwre is crap and the driver is the worst sort of typical HP bloatware) with a Laserjet 1100 that I got free from work. (Their obsolete, non-standard equipment continues to be my gain.) I expect it to be much quieter, faster, less prone to slamming parts together and throwing error messages, and generally much more pleasant to be around. As for the Photosmart, the only thing it's been truly good for is the built in flash memory card reader, so I may at some point get around to dissasembling the thing and building the card reader into a 5ΒΌ bay on my tower machine so I can suck down pictures from my camera without dealing with plugging the thing in to the computer.
Other good stuff:
Andrea and I had a really good time over the weekend hanging out with
kritterfox and
imandunewen. We didn't watch either Narnia or bad movies as we'd planned to, instead contenting ourselves with being snowed in and watching Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, and that's ok. It was very good to be with a small group; very relaxing.
My love and I got together with my parents, brothers, and Lara to have dinner on Tuesday; it was a lovely batch of dill-havarti macaroni and cheese that everyone loved. Afterward, we all sat down to watch a video that my parents dug up of the five of us on summer vacation in Florida. About sixteen years ago. I remembered small bits of the video but I hadn't seen it in years. It was very strange seeing this young boy of eight or nine with so many of my mannerisms.
Oh, and last but not least, Andrea and I sat down and watched a movie she'd been telling me about for some time: Alice's Restaurant. It was a really neat movie and I now have a crush on Arlo Guthrie. *giggles* Thank you for sharing such a special movie with me my love.
That's about it for tonight. I still haven't found time to get to DDR for a couple of weeks, but I did finally find the memory card so I have access to all my saved data. Soon I hope. In the meantime, I'm getting back to clearing out my hard drive and, hopefully, cleaning up.
