Apr. 26th, 2006 07:00 pmI spent a part of last night diagramming my computer room and associated furniture on graph paper, cutting the furniture out, and playing with different arrangements of items. This was prompted by having broken my old computer desk over the weekend. When I say old, I mean, of course, I simply mean older than the other items in the room. I've never had new furniture in my life, save for the futon I bought when Andrea came to visit me in Wisconsin for the first time so that we didn't have to sleep on the floor. This computer desk was in my house in Illinois before my family moved to Wisconsin. It used to sit in front of the little closety nook in the living room where my parents had the giant styrofoam-pellet-stuffed balloon that they'd won at Six Flags Great America. On top of it sat the Commodore 64 and 128 that I spent untold hours at playing Ultima 4, Alter Ego, and many, many others. In fact, on the underside of the work surface, were one to clamber down and peer upward at it in the dark, is some graffiti that I'm quite sure was left there by rather smaller versions of my own hands some years back. It had a long and good life; may it rest in peaceful pieces.
I said I've never had new furniture, and I don't plan to start anytime soon. I snagged my new computer desk from the curb on the way home from Evil Bob's house a couple days ago. It's the sort of semi-circular desk I've always wanted, all the better to ring myself in monitors that I can just swivel my chair around to view. It's not a smooth curve; it has three straight sections at forty-five degree angles to each other, but I think I like that even more. It's got a black formica (I think) top, metal side and front walls, is in great, solid shape, and weighs about fifty pounds. It's not huge, but I think it will take up one corner of the room nicely. I'm having much fun redesigning the room in my head. The big workbench I built out of plywood is going there, my file cabinet is going there, My server desk will become Andrea's desk and go over there....
I need to drill some holes in the back wall for cables to pass through, finish them off with a rubber molding, and I'll be all set to move it up. I'm going to move my bookcase into the closet that I've now moved six or eight computer cases down into the basement from, and I'll even have room in there along with it for my rolling cabinet with all of my Commodore hardware. I'm so excited about moving stuff around! I love rearranging. Hopefully I can get to it this weekend. I just have to find my hacksaw.
Andrea and I went out to rent a couple more movies tonight. Hollywood Video has a fantastic selection of foreign films. We just rented Love and Pop and Killing Words, and there are so many more really interesting looking selections. Perhaps Moira has finally found a way to get me really interested in seeing movies with her.
In other news, we were thinking about trying to get some people together to all go out to the Kenosha drive-in theatre this weekend. Like Saturday night. If anyone might be interested, please go check out her journal for (forthcoming) details.
'Till later!
