stormdog: (Geek)
As I noted, one of my new toys is a Spectrum24 model 4111 wireless access point. Over the course of the evening, I've managed to dig up a serial cable in my basement and learn how to update firmware over a serial connection via the xmodem protocol. That was pretty cool; I felt all kinds of old-school.

I went through three firmware revisions, updating according to the manufacturer's recommended progression. It was really out of date! I went from 1.0 to 1.5 to 2.0 to 2.52, the current release from '03. I seem to still be having some configuration problems with it, but I think that once I get the bugs ironed out I can use it with my wireless router to create a bridge between two wired segments of ethernet on my internal network. That way I can get the computer next to the TV and the XBox on the network together without making any holes in anything. Of course, it's not like I ever use the XBox, much less go online with it, but there's just something satisfying about knowing I could if I wanted to.

Between parts of that, I've been squeezing in disk checking on Dell hard drives with Spinrite and beginning a build of XP on another of my Dell machines. Once I get done with those, I'll start doing builds on the Compaq machines. Those I should be able to make an image of and ghost farily easily, so they should go quick. I've had a surprising number of people expressing interest in hardware from me, so I guess I'll have to start getting it organized, won't I? Speaking of being disorganized, [livejournal.com profile] butterscotchvix, did I leave a Windows XP disk in the CD drive of the laptop I gave you today? I can't seem to find one of mine. Like I said today, I'd lose my head if it wasn't attached. I very much hope that laptop is serving you well by the way. If you have any problems with it, please please let me know.

I should mention dinner with, and pouncing of, my mate in there too. That's always a good thing, and I would be remiss in not indicating how much that brightened my day. And that's not even mentioning the Pink Floyd pajama shorts that she presented me with tonight so I have something to wear when we happen to sleep over at friends' places. My raccoon girl rocks.

And finally, I'm also happy to have figured out, during one of my trips home with Serin this week, that I can create 'trays' on my IMAP server, which are like folders that can hold other folders but not messages. You just have to name a folder with a '/' at the end and it becomes a tray. That should help with my mail organization. I'm glad I figured that out; it was a feature that I thought was sadly lackingin Mercury. Even though you can't actually put messages in them, it still helps for sorting things out more sensibly.

It's getting really late and I suppose I should go to bed. 'Till later!
