Dec. 11th, 2006 06:29 pmHaving gone through a large amount of laundry and managed to get most of the kitchen clean, I think it's safe to say that my mate and I feel like we had a nicely productive weekend. We're finally going to have the handy-dude come over to fix our front door handle and dripping sink. Woo.
As well,
posicat and the two of us went driving all around Kenosha on Saturday. We stopped at Chester's Electronics for a project box for me and ended up buying an ARK Easi-1b for two dollars. I'm still not quite sure what it was, but it's been gutted and I've sized up where in the case the components I have are going; it should work out pretty nicely once I break out the Dremel knock-off that I don't know I'm getting for Christmas.
After that, we stopped at Petco to buy cat litter and food. There was an adopt-a-cat thing going on and the three of us spent a good hour or so picking up and snuggling cats. The two that most stand out in my memory were a black cat with a missing eye and a ginger kitten who was obsessed with batting at a zip tie that was sticking out from his cage. I oohed and aahed over some ferrets and bunnies too, as well as a pretty Golden Retriever who was being groomed. I tried to talk with the bird who'd been so enthusiastic in his response to me last time, but he was pretty much uninterested in interacting with me.
From there, we went to Menards, only because no one had bothered to tell me that we have a Lowe's just a little way up the street. I probably should have known this; after all, I've lived in Kenosha for over ninety percent of my adult life and Andrea's only been here for a couple of years. This is not atypical for me though. Posi and I located a length of cpvc piping, a shower diverter, some hose, and some related bits; we'd decided to duplicate a project he'd completed at his apartment; a pipe that runs from the front of the shower to the back, hung from the curtain rod (in my case, the door frame) and has small holes drilled along its length to produce a rain-like effect. We also, almost as an afterthought, bought the screws that we needed for our original reason for the hardware stop; to fix the futon at my house, who's front left leg had split vertically up it's length.
After that, we got dinner at the Old Country Buffet. A number of local furs seem to prefer the Golden Corral, but I like Old Country partly because the selection always seems a little better, but mostly because you fill your own drinks there. I must drink very quickly because I am almost never at a restaurant where I'm not sitting for some time with an empty glass between refills.
And finally, we stopped in at Big!Lots, where I'm pretty sure I bought something, I just can't remember what it was. Oh, and we found a nice Dremel knock-off toolkit for a reasonable price that I convinced my mate to buy me for Christmas. Now that will be a great surprise on Christmas morning!
After getting home, I found that someone had taped a note to my front door threatening a call to the police over my truck which had allegedly not moved in four days. I will admit some confusion over that; not only am I pretty sure I'd moved it more recently than that, but I don't quite understand what the problem would be with it staying there for four days anyway. I called the police non-emergency number and got clarification on what happens as a result of a complaint about a stationary vehicle; a police officer will mark the tires and then, if the vehicle hasn't moved after another day, will issue a ticket. I should have asked how long a vehicle can remain in one spot before it becomes an issue -four days does not seem excessive to me- but I forgot while I was on the phone. I may call back later and ask.
Another thing to bear in mind on this is that Kenosha enforces alternate side parking over the December through February months; you have to park on an odd numbered side of the street on odd numbered days and vice versa, so perhaps I'd been on the wrong side of the street for a day somewhere in there. I fail to see how that's anybody's problem but mine though. I have to wonder if we've incurred the wrath of the neighborhood somehow. I'm sure that, on our block, we're 'those' neighbors. Andrea says that there's a child-care center across the street from us; maybe someone there saw my 'Hate is not a family value' bumper sticker and thinks I'm going to corrupt the tender youth of America in accordance with the secret homosexual agenda. *shrugs*
So, I wrote a note to post, alongside the original one, on the back window of the bed cover on my truck, but my mate cajoled me into posting it on our front porch windows instead. The text of the note is: "Police advised that I have twenty-four (24) hours after issuance of a complaint to move the vehicle in question. If you feel alerting the authorities is necessary, I encourage you to do so. I will take necessary action to avoid a ticket, of course, but four days really doesn't seem like an egregious time frame to leave a vehicle; I could have been sick or or on vacation. Besides; it has been moved more recently than that." I suppose I'll take it down tonight; I imagine that the whoever the misguided Martin Luther emulator was will have seen them by now if he cares at all.
I got some of the random tech off the porch while I was cleaning up too, so that's looking a little nicer. I still have six or seven 17" monitors out there. A few people in
wooisme's journal expressed interest, but here's the call again; if you want one, speak up now or they're going to the LAFFlist or freecycle. They're just too darn big and bulky to Ebay, and probably wouldn't fetch that much money anyway; everybody wants flat panels.
My head hurts today; there was a loud, off-balance motor sort of noise above us at work today. When we had our facilities person check it out it turned out to be a malfunctioning exhaust fan that he turned off. That was part of it, but I'm just feeling sort of generally head-achy; it helps to be out of there and heading home. I'm really looking forward to dinner with my parents tonight; my star is making some of her really good baked macaroni and cheese.
As well,
