I have a large number of records, most of them 78s, from my grandparents. I think that the best thing for me to do with them is to convert them to digital (I told my grandpa I'd do that anyway when I'm able to 'cause he wants copies of them) and then either give them back to them if they want them (they probably won't) or sell them to a collector. There are a few that I'd like to keep (grandpa says he has a signed copy of Meade Lewis' Six Wheel Stealer in there somewhere), but I don't think I really need to have two or three hundred pounds of vinyl around.
Anyway, I guess I thought I'd ask whether any of you reading this have a turntable that will play 78s and doesn't suck. I have one that doesn't suck but won't play 78s, and one that will play 78s, but sucks. Neither of those combinations quite work. I'd love to be able to borrow one from someone instead of buying one, but it would have to be one you don't use much; the process will probably take a few months.
My plan is to just set a turntable up next to my computer, plug it in to an amp I have sitting in the basement, and then just convert a record a night as time allows. I suppose I should find some software to clean up noise and pops on the audio track too. I know about a few options that are out there, but opinions on that would be good too.
I took a quick look around LJ for audiophile communities to pose questions to, but I didn't find anything in my hasty search. I'll look more thoroughly later; for now I'm going to go clean more.
In other fun news, our refrigerator seems to have stopped working. The freezer portion works, but the main section is not getting cold. I'll have to try to figure that out too.
