Sep. 30th, 2007 07:35 amMy new bed is very, very tall. At least, compared to the mattress and box spring we had sitting on the floor for the last few months. Getting on to it, I feel like someone who's used to stepping down into a little Asian coupe and is now climbing into a big Ford truck. But my back likes the mattress (which was in remarkably good shape for being used and free) and I certainly like the extra space. Having a king is quite nifty; we just need new sheets now.
tybis went with me down to Chicago to pick the thing up in the 12' x 9' trailer we rented and attached to the Dakota. I drove and, of course, got minorly lost several times on the way there and once on the way back. We were an hour late picking up the hardware, but the owner was not unhappy about it. I'd originally reserved a cargo van for it, which would have cost me thirty plus fifty-nine cents a mile. Fortunately, I looked at the trailer, which was twenty dollars with no mileage cost, and said, 'you know, I think that would work.' Probably saved about sixty or seventy dollars in millage, even if the box springs did blow off the trailer while driving north down I-94 (I pulled over into the unused right lane which was blocked off for construction and dashed out to retrieve them. Fortunately traffic was very slow there (construction again) and I was able to get them back undamaged.).
I have a lot, a lot of stuff in my living room right now, even after moving all of Andrea's stuff to the porch, and all of the cardboard on the porch in to the garage. Tybis and I dropped off Andrea and my old mattress and box spring in front of the St. Vincent De Paul store and made room in the bed of my truck to put all the cruft in that doesn't move today. I don't quite know where it's going yet- I may have to call around and find a recylcing center somewhere nearby- but I just don't want it here any more. The relatively recent computers, if people don't want to trade for them, are going to be rebuilt with Windows XP for my dad to give to some of his students who need computers and can't afford them. I have four that are faster than 1Ghz and should be entirely usable for a school kid to do general school kid stuff on.
I'm still more than a little sore from all the moving around of stuff yesterday and Friday night, but I'm looking forward to having people around and poking through tech today.
