I saw an ad on Craig's List this morning for a high hat (for those not familair with the term, it's the two cymals that sit on a stand facing each other and are controlled by a foot pedal) for $25. So I gave the guy a call and drove out to meet up. He was in northern Kenosha, so it was a pretty short drive.

As it turned out, it was just a high hat stand (the writer of the ad was a believer in brevity being the soul of wit). Which is still a good deal. But even cooler was the rest of the hardware he had.

All set up in the front room was a breathtaking vintage '60s Ludwig kit with bright shiny cymbals galore, a white pearlescent finish, a double bass pedal, and a floor tom that had to be about two feet deep. It was a wood that's no longer legal to harvest, he told me; 'teak or something like that'. After playing a couple of snare rolls and a few little runs on the rest of the kit, he let me try it out. I have now learned what a good snare drum feels like. It was so much bouncier and snappier than mine. I wonder if I need to tighten up the head, or maybe just get a new one. It was so much easier to do drum rolls with the extra bounce. Mine just doesn't do that. The owner used to play with a group whose name I can't remember right now. Shoot, I should have made a note or something. It wasn't someone I'd heard of; I think it was local. He said they're on MySpace.

I have such hardware envy now. He made really fantastic sounds with it. He said he'd really let it rip and show off, but he's already gotten two noise tickets from the police so he's keeping it down. *laughs*

I talked to him a little bit about how I was just starting out after playing Rock Band for a while and that I'd just bought a kit this past week and was trying to teach myself. He stressed the importance of learning all the standard rudiments and then, while I played with his snare a bit, showed me the right way to hold drum sticks. Then he only accepted $20 for the stand. He said I'd need money for equipment if I was new to the field. Really nice guy!

As a bonus, someone who I think was his dad was there and, though he was about 60 or so, he's a certified computer tech. He and I talked computer hardware for a while too! Hehe! Good day so far!

Oh, I almost forgot to mention. I took one of the platters I removed from a late '80s Seagate 5ΒΌ" hard drive a while ago and, using fishing line, suspended it three ways from the ceiling joists above my drum set and played with using it as a cymbal this morning. It kind of sort of works! *laughs* I'm hoping it's old enough hardware that the drive platter isn't ceramic on the inside. I guess if it shatters, it isn't old enough!
