stormdog: (sleep)
I decided to be silly and have [livejournal.com profile] akreaveter take a couple of pictures of me with the couple of guitars I have here.

They're both classical acoustics. The one on the left belongs to my parents. It's a Tres Pinos model 101 that my mother bought in Mexico before I was born. The one on the right is a Hohner Contessa model HG-15 that I scored at a Goodwill for about $30 or $40 a few years back.

My mother has a really good ear. She tried all the guitars in the little store in Guadalajara and of course ended up with the most expensive one in the shop. It's really neat to compare them to each other. Even with a crack on the face and a split at the bottom of the body, the Tres Pinos sounds so much deeper and richer. I'm happy to have found the Contessa at the Goodwill; it's certainly playable to my untrained ear and you can't beat the price, but it can't help but sound a little tinny in comparison.

One more that shows off the beautiful glowing finish on the Tres Pinos behind the cut. )

My hair looks a little flat and unruly; it's really hot up here!

So I was Googling Woody Guthrie and doing a little bit of reading about him. His guitar had a sticker on it reading "This machine kills fascists". I find myself kind of fascinated by that. I'd really like to know where that phrase comes from. It seems odd to call a guitar a 'machine', so I'm thinking that he borrowed the phrase from another source, but nothing on the internet seems to give any thought to the matter. It's something that would be fun to research if I could figure out how.

It also kind of makes me want to be a photojournalist and put a sticker on my camera like the one this guy did:

This Machine Kills Fascists v2.0

I wish I still had my Dymo labeler that made the old-school labels with raised lettering like that. If anybody knows where to get one, please let me know!

I hope I can has weekend soon.

(Some pictures of Guthrie with the sticker can be found by Googling something like Woody Guthrie kills fascists in an image search.)
