As I thought about options for being more decorative, I realized that I have this wicker basket full of hair ornamentation on my dresser that I haven't looked through in a long time. How did that happen?

I just went through it and found a number of things that I'd kind of forgotten about. Typically, I've had my hair up lately, but maybe I'll try wearing it down here and there and using barrettes or my tail cuff (a hollow cast-pewter 3/4 circle with leaf and vine motif that wraps around a pony tail).

I'm going to wear this leaf-shaped one to class today (last class of the year!) and while working at the help desk.

I really need to learn to braid my own hair. I've been saying that for a long time, but I'm actively looking for a dresser mirror that I can use to teach myself over winter break.

I got my last paper of the semester submitted online tonight. My next (and first!) final is on Wednesday. Tonight, I'm going to edit photos from my Illinois trip. I'm really feeling motivated to get those done and write up a trip log and all my notes from the little notebook I kept jotting thoughts and observations in.

Check out this awesome space-age lobby. Would you say this is '60s? Maybe '70s?

The facade shows a strong Art Moderne influence, with the thin horizontal and vertical banding. That would suggest a build date in the '30s, or maybe '40s. It's hard to say though.

Old Joliet Prison in Joliet, Illinois. There's a lot of history in this building, but it's probably best known for its appearance in "The Blues Brothers".

This prison was built with limestone quarried on site by convicts. Though it opened in 1858, it did not have running water or toilets in the cells until at least a decade into the 20th century.

This gothic monster of a building must have been a very imposing sight, rising above mid-nineteenth-century Joliet.

Old Joliet Prison saw its last inmates pass through its gates in 2002. Closed as a jail, it now attracts tourists to Joliet for a look at architectural, prison, or movie history.

This unassuming brick building, now a storefront church, seems to have been the first ever Dairy Queen restaurant. More about it here at Roadside America.

I have a soft spot for paint-on-brick, whether it's advertising, signage, or art. This example caught my eye as I drove through Joliet. The building it was painted on had some nice terra cotta details too, though they aren't really in any of my shots.
