While researching a presentation I'm doing, I found a quote on sexual orientation by Cynthia Nixon that I like enough to share. It reflects my view on the subject. Not that orientation is a choice for everyone, but that it can be and is for some people and there's no reason for that not to be ok.

"Why can’t it be a choice? Why is that any less legitimate? It seems we’re just ceding this point to bigots who are demanding it, and I don’t think that they should define the terms of the debate."

When we say that being gay is ok because it's not a choice in the context of justifying the existence of GLB people, then we're saying that there's something wrong with being gay. Otherwise, the issue would be moot.

Heh. I posted a rebuttal to a meme pointing out supposed hypocrisy of blaming guns for shootings but people for bombings. I pointed out that what people are really blaming is *gun availability*, not guns themselves. It's a fine distinction perhaps, but a valid one. That it's a natural conversation to have after a tragic shooting, whereas such a discussion about bombs is meaningless since the item in question is already illegal. That guns have a valid place in society, but that some level of control is legitimate so 12 year olds with credit cards aren't nipping off to the store to pick them up. That there's a great big gray area between free access and prohibition and it creates grounds for legitimate debate on policy.

Then I saw the meme pop up again on another wall.

Sorry, but I'm not going to response to them individually. *laughs* I'll just say something here and be off to homework.

Or actually, to bed since I wrote that when I was working the help desk and am now home where I can sleep. Ah, sleep....
