Also (he writes, having just read through the presentation he's working on out loud and thus is looking to rest his mouth before doing it again), I figured out at the archives today what is meant by "school section" on so many of the old tax roll entries for properties in the city of Racine back around the turn of the 20th century and before. I don't know how many people care, but I think it's kind of interesting.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/School_LandsAs it happens, some of downtown Racine is smack-dab in section 16 of Township 3 North, Range 23 East, which explains why there are, like, 80 blocks all labelled as being part of the school section. And it helps me figure out where they are, for the nice woman who's trying to track down modern addresses for a few real estate listings from 150-year-old tax rolls!
I love *knowing* things like this.
