" I remember tripods!!! They still make them."

Oh dear. Oh dear.

Buildings in Dubuque

More, including a funicular railroad, a huge Victorian house, and a very unusual terra cotta cornerstone, behind the cut. )

And there are even more at my Flickr page, should you want to see them.

Photos of two large, historic (1890 and 1910) theatre buildings in Dubuque behind the cut. )

One of them is an earlier Rapp and Rapp design. The architectural firm of Rapp and Rapp is nationally famous for work on theatres in the 1920s and '30s, as well as some earlier and later examples.

The Grand Opera House is an 1890 Richardsonian Romanesque, and the 1910 Five Flags Center (neƩ Majestic) is, I think, some sort of European revival style. Theatres in 1910 hadn't gotten nearly as whimisical and flamboyant as they could be in the '20s, but they were still pretty grand, and sometimes fanciful, affairs.

Some motel parking lots are dangerous because they are in bad parts of town, or are poorly lit, or maybe have big pot-holes to step in and hurt yourself. Not many present the danger of large rocks falling on your head.

I loved the geometry of the motel walkway too. It was fun trying to compose interesting shots there.

The Dubuque Town Clock is one of the stranger monumental scale structures I've seen in a town.
The cupola and clock (1873) are much older than the pre-cast column (1971) that supports it, replacing the building that the cupola once adorned.

When I post more than one or two photo posts per day, as I've been inclined to do lately, I'll just lj-cut all the photos so you're not forced to deal with lots of non-text content all at once. If they sound interesting though, I hope you'll click through and maybe even tell me what you think!)

This is the second town clock. The first one is an example of the way constructions techniques were something of a matter of trial and error once upon a time. That first clock was too heavy for the building it was built on and the whole thing collapsed, destroying a store and killing a few people.
