Bike Repair!
Jan. 25th, 2015 02:57 pmNot only did I remove the back wheel from Perseverance, my winter bike, and replace the inner tube, but I *think* I'd had the rear brake connected incorrectly for some time. Maybe that's why it was locking up occasionally. I guess we'll see!
Disconnecting the cable for the geared hub plus the cable for the roller brake to remove the wheel is definitely more complex than just releasing the caliper on the linear pull brakes on Longing, my other bike. I wouldn't want to deal with it in on the road in the winter. But then, I don't want to deal with a flat on the road in the winter at all, and would probably take a bus.
I'm also starting to feel like some of these devices are moving bicycles toward the point where service by a home mechanic is difficult. They're not there yet I suppose. But I do think that the axle connections on my geared hub need a little lubrication and I'm not quite sure what the right way to do it is, or how to disassemble the external parts of it for cleaning. I could probably figure it out. But one of the things that I love about using bikes is a feeling of independence that comes from being able to maintain them. I think I'd accept the trade off of more frequent maintenance and even mildly reduced utility in some weather conditions in return for not having to worry about my capability to do repairs.
