I haven't written anything here since just after Midwest Furfest; I've been trying to, but I haven't quite managed to find the combination of time and motivation. My friend
laureth just posted something in her journal about how one of the biggest things that being 'a grown up' does to you is strip all of the unscheduled time out of your life. Everything becomes very planned and organized.
Almost all of last weekend was occupied. Don't misunderstand; it was very pleasantly occupied. And this weekend is booked full too. Again, there are a lot of things I'm looking forward to in our upcoming trip to Detroit, but there's so much I wish I had time for at home too. I'm trying to get myself to worry less about it; I'm trying to accept that, if I just work on what I can, when I can, things will work themselves out as they always do. It's a difficult concept to instinctualize though.
I got some organization done on Sunday, my only free day of the weekend. Though
wooisme and I slept in fairly late after our gathering on Saturday, I still had time to unpack and set up the new shelving unit I'd bought at Menard's during the week. It's a pretty nice rack of the same sort that
samii_tiger and
tybis have in their kitchen. It's a little bigger than I'd quite realized, or perhaps the space in my basement was smaller; but it does fit with a little shoehorning and rearrangement. A great deal of my computer hardware has been sorted and organized on its shelves and I am pleased that I'm able to find a lot more stuff more easily, not to mention that my computer room is a little less cluttered now. After a little more work, I'm going to start putting more things up on Ebay or Craig's list (if they seem salable) or the LAFF list and/or Freecycle (if they are not worth selling). I've just realized that the more random stuff that I have no use for that I get out of the house, the less stressed I'll be about clutter. Yes, I know; brilliant reasoning. Next I'll go on to prove that black is white and get killed at a zebra crossing.
On the subject of moving things out of the house, I apologize to
sideband for not having looked up your contact info and sent you mine yet so we can get those Travan drives to you. Promise I'll do that today.
What was I saying about the weekend? Let's see. On Thursday we had dinner with my family; my grandparents, both sets of aunts and uncles, and their assorted children. It was good to see all of them again; it had been far too long. I'm hoping it will be a shorter gap this time; my grandfather is going to buy and lend me a nifty little vinyl-to-digital recorder so I can start putting all of his 78s into digital format for him. Once he buys one, he's planning to come visit so he can drop it off and we can have dinner or something. I really love my grandparents and feel bad that I don't know them better, so I'm really looking forward to that. I wish I had been better at connecting with people when I was younger; there are a lot of people in my life that I would have liked to know better. But I wasn't, and I don't, and I just have to try to make up for it now. I gave grandpa a copy of K.D. Lang's Hymns of the 49th Parallel while I was there (he'd told me that he really likes Leonard Cohen and there are a couple of covers on it) and we talked about music and stuff for a little while; I guess I'm getting a little better at it.
On Friday, my mate and I drove down into Chicago for brunch with
jimcyl and
daveqat. We had dim sum, real dim sum, for the third time in my life. Oh, that's good stuff! I still need Jim, or at least someone who knows what things are, around to tell me what I will and won't like, but it's so yummy. Post food, we drove through the magnificent mile to look at people and storefronts, and then spent some hours at their apartment, just lounging about and talking. I should again note how much I've missed them; we have to do this more often.
We were up out of bed early on Saturday to do a little tidying for the gathering we were having that afternoon. WE got that out of the way shortly and I drove over to
serinthia and
todd_riverden's apartment to pick Serin up for painting of toenails and watching of Young Sherlock Holmes. The movies was really quite good! I'd never seen it before and was surprised at the similarity of some parts of it to Temple of Doom, and I just don't think the primary villain was smart enough to have become Moriarty, but it was a lot of fun to see. As for toenails, both of our sets of hindpaws have pretty blue claws now. Whee! *bounce*
After the movie, the rest of our guests began showing up in fannish piecemeal fashion. Todd was first, then my parents and youngest brother. My parents couldn't stay long so they only got to chat with Todd and Serin; I was really hoping they'd be able to meet more of our friends, but that's ok; there's always next time. After they left, the rest of us sat down to watch my birthday present from
lisagems that she gave me at Furfest; The Island. A very Logan's Run-esque movie, it's surprisingly good. That was the third time I've seen it and I continue to enjoy it every time! I made a huge dork of myself by freeze-framing it during one of the lobby shots of Michigan Central Station and blathering about how amazing it is to see in person.
There's another building in the movie that I looked up online too. I at first thought it was Michigan Central too, but Andrea told me that it's a parking garage in Detroit that lives in what used to be a theatre. Wondering if it was something we could see while in Michigan this coming weekend, I did a quick Google search later on at work for "Detroit theatre parking garage" and turned up this link. Emailing back and forth with my mate, I told her that it would be just as well if we don't have time to see it; I'd probably sit in the middle of the floor and cry my eyes out. It is one of the most wrenchingly sad ruins I've ever seen.
More people showed up as the night went on. We gained a
posicat, a
samiitiger, a
tybis, and a
vurtsnake. The group of us had a really nice time talking, geeking, looking at computer hardware, and making huge jets of flame in the backyard by burning most of our extra cardboard boxes in our portable firepit. We definitely intend to have more such gatherings, so watch this space.
In time, most people left to head home, Scott staying a bit later as we all got enmeshed in conversation. I think my mate and I finally got to bed around four or five in the morning, which lead into a late start to Sunday which lead to the organizing and cleaning up that I already noted above. *woofs* There's so much going on these days.
Speaking of so much going on, we have a trip to Michigan this weekend that I'll probably write about later (I so wish I had a decent working camera), and we're getting together with
posicat for more Heroes this Thursday after work. I'm so excited to be doing more with friends. I really need to catch up on paying some bills tonight, but other things can wait; I just have to keep telling myself that life's too short to worry unduly about a house being messy when there are so many really important people to see and things to do.
