How can you tell that the federal government, for all that it spends money on $400 toilet seats and multi-billion dollar games of sim-country that they can't win, are some cheap bastards?

Out of all the bills I'm paying tonight, doctor's visit, parking ticket, even state tax, the federal tax bill is the only one that doesn't perforate the little slip that you're supposed to tear off and send with your payments. No, for them you have to dig up a pair of scissors.

Has Stormdog become miraculously more organized this year than he was last year you may ask? After all, he only just got his tax forms in the mail last week. Could he have already done his taxes and be mailing in the balance owed to Uncle Sam like a good little citizen? Well, no. This is from last year. But better late than never, right? I'm working on that whole organization thing, really I am.

What other events of note have transpired this eve? I got Kuma's toenails clipped. Though he still looks at me with love in his eyes, it's the love of a man for his doddering elderly relative who, having forgotten his medication again, is wandering about with a set of shears and telling his family that their fingers have grown too long again and need to be trimmed. It's a cautious sort of love. At least once I put down the clipper, all wrongs are instantaneously righted.

Why are we clipping his nails you may ask? Even if you don't, I'll tell you anyway. We're taking him to the vet on Thursday after work to see if we can do anything for his back leg. He's had one leg that's given him trouble since before I met him (it's related to a jump he took off of a patio that was higher than he expected) but it's been getting worse lately and I can tell he has a little trouble getting around after being out in the snow for any length of time. I think he's probably getting arthritic. Poor puppy.

It's weird; for some reason my team lead's fan that he has at work keeps speeding up and down; maybe we have fluctuating power in our building. That wouldn't surprise me in the slightest from the way I keep hearing the UPSs in the server room click on and off intermittently. But there's something about the cycling up and down of the noise of the rotating blades that invariably calls to mind the noise of a box fan sitting in an open window as a wet, fresh, breeze, full of new life and things awakening, pushes the vanes into occasional frenzies of pure joy of living. It's a very Spring sound. That, together with the music I'm listening to at the moment, have me feeling very energetic, and very much anticipatory of coming warmer days.

I know, I know, it's not even the beginning of February yet; it just seems like, in so many ways, this is going to be a year of great beginnings for my mate and I. I'm making huge progress in getting debts paid off and we're going to be able to start saving for her to go to school. I'm going to start doing some amateur photography in earnest once I pick up my camera and I'm meeting new people to bring me to venues for making images that really grab my imagination. We're in the midst of cleaning up the basement and moving stuff out of the house, not to mention getting everything more organized in general around here. I'm just feeling a lot of promise right now.

Here's to the future!
