stormdog: (sleep)
[personal profile] stormdog
We had a really good time over at [livejournal.com profile] polymorphism's place on Saturday watching mistied versions of bad movies. I'd never seen any of these 'Riftrax' that Mike Nelson and company have been doing; they're pretty nifty. I'm really looking forward to the next such gathering.

I spend today setting [livejournal.com profile] farmcat up on the machine I've been building for her over here. I had two HP machines from work, one a 2.8Ghz and the other a 3.0Ghz. I set up the faster one for her and kept the slower of the pair to myself to use as an emulation and audio/video computer downstairs (that's actually what I'm using to write this entry as I wait for eleven thousand SNES games to unpack from ZIP). I didn't realize until I got over to my parents' house and began setting the machine up that I realized that it didn't have an AGP slot. If I had realized that, I might have given her the slower one instead.

At least the integrated video doesn't seem to my significantly worse than the card she had. My dad and I installed City of Villians for her and the graphics, while slightly choppy, were actually equal to or better than before, and zone transfers were about a tenth as long as they used to be. I think the move from a late model Pentium III (I think it was seven or eight hundred megaherz) to a 3 gig P IV and from 512MB of RAM to 1 gig much more than made up for the slight video downgrade. We took the memory from her old computer and added it to my dad's to give him a gig on the board and City of Heroes/Villians is running much faster for him too. I'm glad I could be useful.

Posi suggested hanging out today, but I think I'm starting to come down with whatever Andrea had. The ungodly amount of dust I blew out of my dad's computer probably didn't help matters much either. If the state of my throat continues to decline, I might just take a sick day on Monday. I haven't done that yet this year and I really don't want to deal with going out in the cold and ice and talking to people on the phone all day when my throat is hurting. That will give me a chance to figure out just what the heck is dragging from under my truck too.

I noticed on the way home on Saturday that there was a metal plate scraping along the ground. It was gliding noiselessly over the ice and snow, but whenever we hit a bare concrete patch; *scraaaaaaaape*. I got underneath to look, though I didn't get all the way down on my belly because of the, as my parents put it, three inches of snow-cone on the ground. Looks like it might be some of the muffler heat shielding, but I'm not sure. It's very stiff and resisted my one-handed efforts to bend it back up. I'll have to all the way under when I have a chance and investigate more fully.

I should go to bed, but a part of me really wants to get this new and improved entertainment computer set up in the living room.
