When I heard this morning that Michael Mukasey, despite an unwillingness to simply state that a torture method pulled straight out of the Spanish inquisition and that his own country has prosecuted as a war crime for the last hundred years, was well on his way to being made attornery general, I thought that it would be the most disturbing piece of political news I'd hear today.

I was wrong.

From [livejournal.com profile] laureth's journal, here's a link to an article in Esquire about our past history with Iran. You know, the country that Bush et al are going after with the same sort of untrue and illegal threats and propaganda that got us into our mess in Iraq? It seems that right after the events of September 11th, 2001, Iran contacted the United States government and offered to share with us "intimate knowledge of Taliban strategic capabilities". Bushco ignored this offer, and proceeded to name them as part of the 'Axis of Evil'. Even after that, in '03, Iran again offered to participate in unconditional talks with the United States. They were again snubbed. And now, Bush is doing his best to build up to hostile action against them.

Why? Maybe his god appeared in the oval office and told him to. I sometimes wonder if it's possible to rationally explain the man's actions. But what I think is more likely is that he had plans to go after Iran all along. We had the opportunity to involve Iran in our attempt to find and capture those responsible for the terrorist actions of 9/11. Instead, we ignored them and made them the target of what looks very like a years-long, premeditated campaign to find excuses to turn on them as just another obstacle in the way of securing our god-given rights to oil.

Here's the link.

I think that we're going to see even more of this as the world finally begins to realize that oil is a finite commodity and petty (and not so petty) dictators and war-mongers begin to eye up their own shares of it. I am worried. And I don't know what to do beyond try to spread this information around, since the mainstream press are doing a pretty lousy job of it themselves.

The two people who were personally involved in these crucial moments in history and who have come forward to speak publicly about their experiences have been threatened with legal action against them for their trouble. They are afraid of speaking out against their own government.

A government should fear its people. A sovereign nation where the opposite is true is one that I'm becoming increasingly less comfortable living in.
