stormdog: (sleep)

My sweetie is going up to Milwaukee today to visit [livejournal.com profile] mocha_mephooki. Though it would be nice to see Mocha, I've come to the conclusion that I just don't have energy for a long trip out of town when I'm going to be doing that tomorrow for Easter dinner with my extended family and to visit my grandfather in the rehab facility.

Did I mention that he fell and broke his pelvis? No, I didn't. I've been a bit stressed about that. I'd planned to go visit the weekend prior to that to go through some records (you know, the ones made of vinyl with the little grooves on them?) and stuff with him, but the truck was acting up and I didn't make it out. I'm really hoping he's up to visiting the Forevertron this Spring; I've been really looking forward to that since I was too nervous and didn't get to it in the Fall, and I'm a bit anxious about whether he's going to be up to a long car ride now.

The idea of long car rides in general is kind of stressing me out after getting into an accident yesterday. No, I didn't mention that either. I'd gone out at lunch to get bookcases that Andrea found on Freecycle. They were only ten minutes from work, so I figured I'd just dash out and get them. On the way back, I found myself at the intersection of Butterfield and Winchester. I waited for a green light and turned left from the turn lane. Across from me was another car waiting to turn left. I looked in the oncoming traffic lane and didn't see anyone. I was driving slowly since my transmission doesn't let me accelerate very well and (HA!) I was trying to be very careful and not get into an accident. As I was clearing the intersection, a car hit my truck on the passenger side, all the way back behind the rear wheel.

No one was injured and the police, though they had us both come to the station for a report, did not issue citations to anybody. The other car had some front end damage. For my part, the body was bent in under the bed and was scraping against the leaf springs, but I grabbed it and bent it back and it seems perfectly drivable. Given the state of the rest of the body, I doubt anyone will notice the difference. My team lead joked that I might have to worry about the reduction in resale value though. "Yeah," I agreed, "that probably took a quarter of the value or so off. That's gotta be almost $25!" It does look like it fouled up the exhaust system though. From the way it sounds, I'm inclined to think that the pipe broke off before the muffler. Didn't care enough to get on my stomach and look right then, a feeling which has persisted to the present.

The impact did completely knock the cap off of the bed, so the officer helped me lift it back up and I kind of just set it back in place on top of the bed. I had to drive very slowly the rest of the day as it was prone to sliding around and, had I not turned my hazard blinkers on and stopped to adjust it a couple of times on the way home, it would have slid off again. And this was in the middle of a nasty snow-storm with limited visibility on icy roads. Yeah. That was a fun drive home.

I just really don't want to be on the road again today. Sorry Mocha.

I'm going to get a few more things ready for sale and clean up the house. Maybe I'll drag the bookcases in. Maybe I'll try and get the bed cover off the truck and toss it in the backyard to look at when the weather is warmer.

That truck just does not want to make it those last 4,000 miles to 400,000.
