May. 25th, 2008 08:02 pmWow. I missed a lot of stuff out in LJ-land. I'll try and catch up later.
In the meantime, I have to sort out my approximately 700 pictures from the weekend (and I still barely used half my 4GB card; I really ought to start shooting raw) and write about what I did. But in the meantime, here's a recap of Friday and Saturday morning that I wrote in L'anse but didn't have an internet connection to post. Enjoy!
---------------------------
It's eight forty-eight on Saturday (technically seven forty-eight since I've crossed into Michigan and locally it's Eastern time). I just turned the corner where highway 41 goes from northbound to westbound and wooshes across the entrance to L'anse, Michigan. The entrance is at the bottom of a long hill that takes 41 out of the higher part of the UP and down to the bay formed by the Keweenau peninsula. It was the first time I've seen it and I tried to snap a pictures through the windshield.
The shrine of Bishop Baraga, the snowshoe priest, is only a mile or so down the road from L'anse, and that's where I am now, my car parked on the dirt road pointing north from 41, and me sitting in the back with the tailgate open and typing, watching the traffic (which there's a surprising amount of) going by.
I had a can of spaghetti in the engine compartment to warm, but I must not have put it in a good place, because it was not much warmer than the car when I popped it open with the P-38 can opener I keep on my key ring and tried some. I realized that I didn't have any utensils to eat with, so I just scooped it out with the lid. Hobo-tastic! While eating, I put some food and water down for Kuma. He hasn't been interested in his food yet this trip; every time I put some in the back of the car he tried to buy it under his blankets. This time has been no exception, though he did do his best to lick the bits of spaghetti that I dropped out of the dirt where they landed. Dogs are silly.
I didn't stop at any touristy things on the way north; I didn't leave Kenosha 'till a little after eight. Part of that is because after I locked my keys in the car outside of the coffee house Andrea insisted I get a duplicate made to keep in my wallet, 'cause she's not driving 300 miles to unlock it for me!
I drove 'till just about one o' clock, and found myself crashed out for the night in a small field right off of the highway, just outside the town of Crivitz, and about half a mile north of a 45th parallel marker that I'd actually forgotten was there until I saw it since I was originally planning a slightly different route. I went back in the morning and took pictures, though it was a little dark so I'm not entirely sure they came out.
I set my alarm on my cell phone for 7, but woke up a little after four thirty. My sleep was a little fitful at first, but I did eventually manage to get settled in and fall into a nice snooze. I folded the back seats down to give me more space to recline the passenger seat, moved all of my cargo from said seat to the driver's seat, and tried to find a comfortable position. Tough at first, and a little cold, but after trial and error, I got nicely ensconced under a furry blanket, and with an extra pair of pants half way on to cover my feet. I think it will work out better tonight with the bonus of experience. Plus, I didn't actually wake up because I was uncomfortable; I've just found that, when sleeping outdoors, I almost always wake up with the dawn. I feel pretty fully rested too, though we'll see if it catches up with me tonight.
Well, I'm going to photograph the big sign and three supporting tepees next to me here, then go check out the shrine. From there, I'll proceed to the Keweenau. I have no idea when I'll be able to post this since cell phone coverage up here is spotty at best and it's all roaming so I'm not going to pay for a data connection! But you know me; when I go somewhere, I have to write about it. Well anyway, back to the trail.
