Since I seem to be unpopular at work today and have a bunch of tickets in my queue that no one has any help for me on, I thought I'd post a few of my pictures from the weekend! An excellent justification strategy, no? Here's the first half of the trip.

I left the house on time, amazingly enough, at about eight o' clock. I dropped in at my parents' place for a minute, then moved on to Woodman's to get sandwich fixins for me and a snack (some chew-sticks) for Kuma. I spent the next hour smiling after a cashier told me how much she loved my shirt! (A tie-dyed Grateful Dead tee with the teddy bears marching across the front.)

I plugged the address for the Rochelle Railroad Park into my GPS, told it to cacluate for least use of motorways (I have it talking to me in British English), and followed its lead.

Pictures of a flea market, a dog (only of the four legged variety), and bovines, both ferrous and fiberglass, though none free-ranging, follow.

It took me through Richmond, fairly close to where an aunt and uncle live. I recognized the Ginger Blossom folk art place from driving through on the way there, but I never stopped and looked. I fixed that right up!

It looks like a neat place. I would have liked to go further in, but it was early on a Sunday morning, and it didn't look like there was any activity in the building further up the drive. I remained near the entrance gate.

Grazing mechanicals

The herd of scrap-metal animals grazing there in the field had always drawn my eyes, so I wanted to see them from closer up. Unfortunately, the weekend's rains had made that difficult. Their pasture was flooded enough that they almost seemed to be wading through a lake. Hopefully they can still find a meal, and not suffer too badly from rust.

Kuma looking a bit damp

Kuma doesn't seem all that pleased to be out in this weather in this picture either. "Daddy? Why are we out here daddy? Can we go inside yet? I promise I won't poop on your car seat again. "

But here's a happier looking Kuma-bear. He just like to be close to his people. He's a very co-dependant dog. He does ok when we're out of the house for the day, but he's just exuberant when we get home. At the ripe old age of ten, he bounces like a puppy.

Richmond Flea Market

Nearby was the Richmond flea market. I've always been a sucker for seeing other people's random belongings at flea markets and thrift stores, and my long-time association with [livejournal.com profile] moiracoon has only exaggerated such tendencies. I had to go in, of course.

A booth at the Richmond Flea Market

It was full of all the wonderful cornucopia of bric-a-brac that I was hoping for. It wasn't a big market as such things go, but I spent a fun half-hour or so poking through it all.

Apex mystery machine

I was fascinated by what appeared to be an early electric wash machine. Anyone have a more certain idea of this things's function? It looks eerily like the spawn of The House on the Rock and Little House on the Prairie. (Oh, hey; here's an old advertisement for this company. It is, indeed, an electric wash machine. Wow. That's it there in the upper right. Nifty!)

Camera rack

Most interesting of all was the large rack of vintage cameras and gear that one of the booths contained. Four or five rows of old Brownies, Kodaks, Agfas, and other, less identifiable items.

There are a few more on my Flickr account, but I'll refrain from posting them here. Please, feel free to go look if you're interested! But on to more.

Hebron Lumber

Next it was off to Hebron, a small town of about a thousand, where I took the above picture of a fantastic sign painted on the side of a building. I love old signage, whether it's free standing neon, advertisements on the side of city walls, or rural signs like this one. Neat stuff.

Harvard - Milk Day

And then it was west to Harvard, a town of about nine times the size, and one that's very, very proud of their local festival, Milk Day. A festival which incongruously lasts three days.

Harvard - Milk Day tower

Yes, they're very proud of being the home of Milk Day.

Milk Day - Srs Bizns

Could she talk, this cow would, I'm sure, tell you that Milk Day is srs bzns. More so than the internets. (Further research reveals that this is Harmilda the cow. You can read about her here. You know, now I'm actually kind of tempted to come out and photograph Milk Day. Really. Wanna come?)

As I was driving out of town, I noted that the big fairgrounds nearby is called 'Milky Way park'. This borders on obsession....

Fairdale - Population 152

Thirty miles' drive southwest from Harvard brought me to the less bovine secretion focused town of Fairdale. This was the smallest town I drove through with a population of less than a hundred and fifty. I didn't stop longer than it took to snap a picture of the sign though. I was getting close to my destination in Rochelle and was really looking forward to a chance to eat, use a restroom, and stretch my legs. From Fairdale, it was only another fifteen miles, as the crow flies, to Rochelle, and before very long, I was there! It didn't take long to make my way through the streets of the city to the pretty little pavilion at the railroad park where I could settle in with Kuma.

And that, I will write about next time. Thanks for coming along with me!

Oh, hey; construction has now blocked off the stretch of road immediately in front of the cul-de-sac my house is on, so I get to navigate through every morning and evening now. Plus, I have to drive to a central location to pick up my mail, and we don't know how garbage pickup is going to work yet. Whee?
