Hard Drive Bits
May. 15th, 2009 08:54 amI'm getting pretty burned out on taking these things apart.

And motors (that are very nearly completely useless without the control electronics in the circuit board of the drive itself)!

I only have a handful more to do, and I may just throw in the towel and put 'em back in the basement, or bring 'em to work to dispose of. My motivation came from the thought of bringing them all out to the scrapping place in town for twenty cents on the pound, but really I was just having fun disassembling and looking at parts. (I did, though, take all the aluminum casings for the wall mount computers I brought home over there and got seventeen seventy-five for them. Not too bad.)
The best part of this? I have a stack of hard drive magnets -you know, the super-strong neodymium ones- about two feet tall! I have a dozen or so already employed as fridge magnets from the last time I took some drives apart, but now I have a crapload of 'em. If I knew what I was doing, I'd try to make a wind generator out of them somehow. But I don't.
And finally, I have one more drive that I will take apart. It's a full height, five and a quarter form factor beast that, in size, is half way between a couple bricks and a cinder block. That one I'm going to photograph in various stages of disassembly, 'cause it's just big and neat. *laughs*
------------
The working at home is going ok. I keep having this feeling of paranoia; as though I'm getting away with something and it's going to catch up with me. But I am going through tickets and closing some and getting things done, so I'm just hoping I look good enough to management.
