Why did my brain make me dream of our government air-bursting an atomic bomb over Kenosha/Pleasant Prairie this morning? I was really rattled by that for a while after getting up this morning, and my jaw hurts again since I was clenching it in my sleep. Not cool, subconscious. Not cool. I thought briefly about staying home today and going back to bed, but no. I am off to Chicago by train as I write. Probably just as well.

There's a big change happening in life, as [livejournal.com profile] moiracoon was downsized yesterday. We knew this was going to happen for some time, and it's by no means a surprise. Part of me is happy for her since she didn't care for the job and she now has a little break to do things she's wanted to do like make jewelery, look into nursing school seriously, and clean the house. She's going to be looking for another job too of course. Given her track record, I have little doubt that she'll be able to find something.

We'll reduce expenses for a while. She still wants me to go to New York though, and I still want her to go to the Dells with [livejournal.com profile] mocha_mephooki. Those should be doable. It's probably well that I didn't buy that lens though. Ah well; one of these days.

In the meantime, here's another picture from our trip this past weekend. As the sign that you can't quite see in the frame says, this is a wonder of the steam-powered world; the United States' largest steam-driven pumping engine. It's on display as the centerpiece of a small mining museum in Iron Mountain, Michigan.

The Corninsh Pumping Engine, Iron Mountain, Michigan

This is the largest pumping engine in the United States; it pumped 3400 gallons of water per minute out of its home site, the Chapin mine. The Chapin was dug under a swamp; as well as being one of the most productive iron mines ever worked, it was also one of the wettest. This is called a Cornish engine because it's modeled after those that dewatered the tin mines in Cornwall in the UK. Here, my sweetie [livejournal.com profile] moiracoon poses behind the engine's forty foot diameter flywheel.
