Aug. 8th, 2009 05:09 pmWe're heading back westward right now on I-80, bout fifty miles into Pennsylvania. We're going to detour south along I-81 toward Ashland, and then take a detour from there to visit Centralia, Pennsylvania. I've wanted to see this place for years!
In a strange coincidence, I learned about Centralia due to exploring furry resources online back in '95 or '96, when I first discovered the concept. I found a website that belonged to one Xydexx Squeakypony, who happened to be into ruins and urbex, as well as being a furry. On his page I learned about Centralia, among other awesome sounding places.
Anyway, The trip was long, wonderful, and chock full of niftyness. I've now been in Manhattan (I've been all over Manhattan!), Queens, and Brooklyn. I've been to Coney Island and Harlem. I've seen some Art Deco masterpieces like the Waldorf-Astoria and the GE Building. I've seen breathtaking Gothic churches like the Church of Heavenly Rest and Saint Bartholomew. I've seen Grant's Tomb, and the grave of the amiable child. I can navigate the New York City subway nearly like a native. And I wish I had another month there to photograph and just see things.
I could be happy living in New York City. I never thought I'd be the sort of person who would say that, but I could be happy there.
*yawns* I'm tired, but I'm really hoping we get to Centralia early enough to have an hour or two of light. We're heading west, so we'll gain a little bit that way.
Wish us luck!
--------
Oh, the photo count for the trip so far? Keeping in mind that a lot of them are three or four of the same shot as I tried to get my architectural photos to come out juuuust right....
2,133. More will be coming from our visit to Centralia. (We're just getting onto 61 now....)
