It's random update time!

This past Tuesday after work, [livejournal.com profile] synicism brought me out to a Chicago meetup they go to. I met a few new people (one of whom seemed really interesting and, of course, is moving several hundred miles away). She told me a new way to remember people's names. And you know what? It works! When you meet someone new, she suggested, think of someone you already know with that name in your head and associate it with them. I did that, and it kept the names of all four people I met in my head the whole night, In fact, I still remember them. This is unusual in the extreme for me, and I'm pretty excited about it! It won't help me recognize them by face if I see them again; there's not really anything I can do about that. But it goes a long way toward helping me remember who they are and what we talked about. That's pretty cool.

Speaking of the meetup, it was a good time. It was loud and I had trouble hearing people from time to time, but I still started conversations twice with people or groups I didn't know. One of them, I'm now exchanging online messages with and enjoying talking to. I'm still pretty scared of dealing with a bunch of people I don't know, but I can be brave and do it and extract value from it. That's pretty cool too.

It looks like my move to Rogers Park will be at the beginning of August. I'll have to check with the...what do I call him? Landlord? Roomate? Heh. Anyway, I'll have to confirm things with him. He seems like an interesting person and I think we'll have theatre stuff in common to talk about at the least. I'm looking forward to living in Chicago and going to things like the Japanese language class I've wanted to do for months, and live open-mic story telling like this.

Yesterday, after work, my dad and my brother and I went out to get stuff at Menard's. I got home and fixed the two wall mount light fixtures in the bathroom (they just needed to be taken apart and reassembled, and I redid the wiring connections too), the light fixture in my room upstairs (seems to have just been a little bent at the base of the socket) and a wall outlet in my brother's room (a couple wires had worked loose from the box due to the socket box being loose). Tomorrow, I'm going to see if I can get the cigarette lighter outlet in my mom's car to work so she can use my GPS doohickey.

Tonight, I'm going out for dinner with Moira at this little diner she likes. We went once before and it's a nice place. We'll probably just have time for dinner since she gets up early for work these days.

I've been sitting up here working and playing with the guitar a little bit between tickets. TMBG's 'Another First Kiss' may well be my favorite thing I've yet found to play. It's all easy chords, I love the song, and I can't help but start tapping a foot while I play and sing. It's a really good feeling. I've got a few other pages of chords for other songs open too so I can switch around when I get bored. I'm hoping that I'll be passable enough to play in the jam session at MFF this year. I had such a wonderful time singing last year that I want to be a bigger part of it, and more things like that. Live music is really special.

It seems that I am on call for work during the last week of this month and the first of August. Drat; my travels will have to be postponed. I'm certainly going to take that second week of August off though and get out of here for a while! At least by then the wheel bearing issue should be resolved for sure, even though I don't think it's really a problem right now. I checked the wheel hubs after driving to Kenosha from Chicago and not one of them seemed at all hotter than normal. Unlike yours truly in this Summer weather.
