Jul. 19th, 2010 08:44 pmIn the dancing lessons from God department (Peculiar travel suggestions are dancing lessons from God. -Kurt Vonnegut), it seems I need to visit Cedarburg.
As I was sitting in the last car on the late train back to Kenosha (I missed the first train due to work), the conductor sat down next to me and started talking. We talked about his experiences on the railroad and what he does. It's been 13 years for him, purely freight work for 8 years before UP hired him and some other folks out to Metra for a some runs. He lives in Port Washington and drives to Kenosha for work every morning. We talked about Port Washington and the pirate festival, and he told me about Cederburg. It's a beautiful town, he said, full of vintage storefronts with Pabst signs from the '50s. I asked whether there were any old theatres there; oh yes he replied.
We talked about other stuff too, like the railroad museums in Green Bay and Union, and old steam engines, and the SS Badger, and more. I wished I had my voice recorder. But I decided that, clearly, I'm supposed to go visit Cederburg.
Cinema Treasures tells me I can see the beautifully restored facade of the Rivoli Theatre, brought back to its 1930s Art Deco splendor.
The town website also notes that there is a sort of local festival called Ridikulus Days with bargains galore on the streets of Cederburg. Oddly, it only runs from 10 to 5 on Thursday and Friday, so it's a little difficult to get to! Still, I think I'm going to drive up there this weekend and get some pictures of the town. Maybe see a movie. (When I first saw the festival, I assumed it was a weekend and excitedly called Moira to see if she wanted to go with as it sounds very much like her thing. It's really too bad it's just the weekdays.)

On an urelated note, I need to buy another battery for my phone. The battery life on this thing sucks. Hardcore.

As I keep picking out pictures to create a set to give to my grandfather, I'm revisiting another picture from a while back; this one is of Wildcat Canyon Falls in Starved Rock State Park in Illinois.

Here's my previous version of this picture. The difference is really striking if you put them in two different tabs and flip back and forth. I've learned a lot about Photoshoppery!
