I should write about my busy Thanksgiving weekend before I forget. I do still want this journal to be a sort of place where I can look back on and reflect on what was going on in my life, and it doesn't server that purpose so well if, at the periods when I'm most active and there's so much to write about, I never get around to actually doing so.

I already covered my visit to UW-Parkside. Though as a follow up to that, I have called New Horizons and had them send a transcript to Parkside, which I called Parkside about and was told that it needs to be an 'official' transcript. Parkside is going to call New Horizons directly and hash out what they need to be sent and will call me if I have to do anything. I love when I can wiggle out of being the middle-man in things like that.

That evening, I was talking to Michelle about going to see Tangled, but that didn't come to pass. Instead, we drove out to Woodman's to get ingredients and made cookies! One batch of peanut butter cookies according to a family recipe, and a second batch wherein we substituted Nutella for peanut butter. Now, I wasn't sure about how the Nutella cookies came out (they were a little flat), but [livejournal.com profile] posicat described them as 'epic', so I'll take that to mean they were a success. He suggested a bit more butter next time, which I will keep in mind should I make them again.

Saturday was spent mostly with Posi and [livejournal.com profile] tybis. We visited Big!Lots (where I bought some bedclothes) and Goodwill. Preceeding that was dinner at Sweet Tomatoes for the first time in a while. I love that place! I eat two or three plates of salad there because I can build it with whatever I want on it, and their soups are so good. Together, Posi and I built a spaceship dock on his Minecraft server, and I made a few bits of progress on my theatre too.

On Sunday, [livejournal.com profile] farm_cat and No-LJ-James accompanied me to my grandparents' place, where I showed Grandpa a bunch of New Orleans pictures, along with some stuff from a few abandonments. We had dinner with them, along with my aunt and uncle and their kids, and it was a really nice time.

I'm going to go visit them more often once I'm not working set hours and I have the opportunity to. My grandparents are really interesting to talk to, and I want to hear more of their stories. I was talking about learning Japanese, and my grandfather talked about a Japanese girl he knew when he was in school around World War II who disappeared from his life when her family was sent to the internment camps. And it just struck me that World War II and things like the horrible things we Americans did to the Japanese were things that my grandfather, having grown up in California, lived through.

Grandma asked for Moira's address to send cards and things like that. (Have I mentioned how sweet my grandparents are? For all my life, they've always sent cards for me not just for things like Christmas and my birthday, but for things like Valentine's Day too. And they usually have little presents in them. My grandparents are wonderful people and I love them.)

Anyway, grandma asked for Moira's address to send her cards and I wrote it down, along with her name and her partner's ([livejournal.com profile] mocha_mephooki) name. Grandma asked who that was, and I said "Oh, that's Moira's partner. Boyfriend. They're living together in Racine."

Grandpa smiled and said "I don't understand your family sometimes." And I thought about that on the way home; how unusual is the way my family works. The way my youngest brother, [livejournal.com profile] akreaveter, is living at home, and the other two of us are in and out so often. The fact that there's a friend of Ak's who's been living in the house for years due to problems with his parents. The unusual nature of my relationships. I suppose we are pretty odd. And I'm grateful for that and for how it's shaped me. I'll also have to tell Grandpa next time I see him that I'm grateful for his acceptance of our oddities. I certainly tell my parents that, but I should tell him that directly too. I also want to tell him that, should he be interested, I'd be happy to explain more of it.

And beyond that, Grandma just wanted to make sure it was ok if she sent cards to both of them, and I said it definitely was, so all is good!

And I suppose that about wraps up the weekend. I'm hoping to write about my experience at the anthropology conference today too.
