Jul. 7th, 2011 11:12 amEven though less than a week has gone by since I last wrote here, I have so much to catch up on that I fear I won't remember all of it!
The trip to House on the Rock did not come to pass. Danae wasn't feeling good that weekend, and I was missing my regular glasses, and we hadn't made reservations anywhere because we weren't sure if we were going, so we postponed. It will be even better next time! Instead, we spent some time at my apartment in Chicago, watching Numbers, eating frozen lasagna, and snuggling on the couch.
The next day, we drove up to my parents' place in Kenosha. We have such a great time playing board games with my parents, my brother, and the other people who live in their house! Several games of Arkham Horror were played. We also looked around the house and discussed housing options for my with my parents.
I'd been planning for some time to build a room in the basement and set up down there. In my head, I thought if I cleaned up the area really thoroughly, scrubbed the walls and floor, got rid of a lot of stuff that's been sitting down there for a long time, and so on, that it would be a decent, livable space. After looking around the basement with her, we drove out to a hardware store to look at books on making basements into a habitable space. They kind of confirmed what she thought already; that while the space could be cleaned up in the short term, as long as there's any kind of moisture getting into the basement, it will continue to get mildewy and not only start smelling bad again, but maybe even cause health problems if I'm sleeping down there every day.
So we discussed alternate possibilities and when I came back to the house I had a few to explore with my parents. One of them, moving into one of the upstairs rooms, would mean displacing either D or P (who live up there along with my brother
akreaveter) into sharing a room with the other. But it was seeming like a better option than the basement. As it turns out, D is planning to move out in September anyway, which makes things much easier! The timing isn't perfect; I'll end up sleeping on the futon in the living room through August, but it's certainly workable. We're going to work at putting the wall up that I want while D is still there (the room he's in is at the top of the stairs and has no wall or door or anything; you have to walk through it to get to P's room and my brother's room. So we're going to construct a sort of hallway through it and give me a more private space.) D is moving into a sort of shared house with his friends, some of whom I know from them coming over to game with D and my brother at my parents' house. I hope that works out well for him.
P is talking about wanting to move into the basement himself here, but I'm not sure if that's a good idea. Still, I suppose if he really wants to give it a try, he can. It needs to be emptied out and cleaned anyway, which I'm going to help with when I'm up here.
Anyway. It seems I know where and mostly how I'm going to be living come August and September, so I feel good about that. I need to start moving stuff up to Kenosha soon. Fortunately, there really isn't that much to move. I'll just start taking some with me on every trip up and I bet it won't be that long before my room is looking pretty empty.
I feel sad about leaving Chicago. I love big cities in general, and Chicago in particular, having the closest personal relationship with it of any of the ones I know. Still, I feel like I was only just starting to get to know her. Maybe, someday, I'll live there again. Or someplace different and equally awesome. Life is full of possibility.
For now, I'm going to concentrate on kicking ass at school so I have options as far as where I want to continue my education.
Well, I guess I followed that tangent out to its end; back to the main thread. So, after gaming in Kenosha, Danae was kind enough to drop me off in Chicago before driving home to Aurora, even though we didn't leave Kenosha until way late, and she didn't get me to Kenosha until 10:30 or 11:00. She is a wonderful kitty who I very much appreciate and love.
I got up Monday morning and drove out to St. Charles for the usual bit of helping the ex-coworker with stuff at his place, then drove to Aurora again for dinner with Danae. We ate at Ballydoyle again, a fun Irish pub with awesome food that's chock full to bursting with fantastic architectural salvage pieces like leaded glass windows and great big chandeliers. When I told the waitress how cool I thought the building was, she took me over to another room and showed me a secret door!
After dinner was more Arkham Horror. Now that we've realized that the game actually works pretty well with two people and we don't have to find a big group that's willing to sit through a 3 hour board game, I suspect our copies will be seeing the light of day more often!
And now, I'm back in Kenosha, where Super-mechanic Juan is going to fix my car this week. It was originally going to be yesterday and today, but he got delayed yesterday and couldn't start 'till this evening. He things the job may run into Saturday.
I actually already have plans for the weekend, which primarily involve hanging out with
lisagems and doing things in the city. We were going to go for a ride somewhere on one of the two days, but maybe that won't come to pass. But one way or another, I'm going to get back to Chicago; I just might have to take a train in while Juan finishes on my car.
