I've never thought of literacy as a privilege in this context before. This is really interesting to read, especially for those of us, like me, who often get frustrated at the terrible grammar and writing on the internet.
I still feel that my criticism of that monument is a valid one. That was no off-the-cuff bit of prose. It should have been checked over before being inscribed in bronze, and this does not universally exonerate grammatical offenders. But the thoughts above are worth keeping in mind when talking to people via text.
