For bicycling, I'm thinking about looking for a pair of earbuds that are designed in such a way that they do not block ambient sound when worn. That on top of the fact that all I'd listen to with them most of the time would be podcasts would make me feel ok about at least trying such a system out and doing some tests to see how how sound-aware I remain and how safe riding would be.
