stormdogThis may be really dull to some of you. But I'm kind of enjoying this (even though I really wish I was done with the draft instead of hoping to finish it tonight), and I know some of you work with this kind of stuff too, so I thought I'd post it here.
Believe it or not, but as I work with Google Earth and the measurement tool to see whether this 1856 land parcel description matches up with the site we were excavating, I find that it would actually be much easier to do this with a good-old-fashioned plat map/land diagram, an architect's rule, and a divider.
The parcel description is kind of cool though. I'm getting much better at reading this old script! And you've got to love the crossed out name and note about the error! To expand and translate;
Part of the Northwest quarter of the southwest quarter. Begin 15 rods (about 250 feet) south and 11 rods (about 180 feet) east of the northwest corner of the quarter. Thence south 86 degrees 30 minutes east for 3 chains and 45 links (about 228 feet), then south 48 degrees east for 2 chains and 57 links (about 174 feet), then south 10 degrees 30 minutes west for 1 chain (66 feet), then north 65 degrees west for 5 chains and 67 links (about 374 feet) to the beginning point.
I found an awesome free online tool that will accept this kind of deed description and produce a rendering of the property for you! It's over here: http://www.genealogytools.net/deeds/ I may end up using it to create an illustration for this paper.
Anyway, I *think* this covers the plot of land that I was digging at during field school. It's a little hard to match this up to an official survey without more tools than I have access to. Too bad I haven't taken all those GIS classes yet....
