I haven't had time to write up a response to that "10 rules for dating my daughter" bit that's gone around here from time to time. It's a piece of writing that makes me more than a little uncomfortable in the way it seems to treat children as property and strips them of agency in the formation of their own relationships.

Fortunately, The Ferrett over on Livejournal wrote up a response that I like enough to share here in the absence of one of my own. It's called "Dear Daughter: I Hope You Have Some Fucking Awesome Sex"

It starts like this:

There’s a piece of twaddle going around FetLife called 10 Rules For Dating My Daughter, which is packed with “funny” threats like this:

“Rule Four: I’m sure you’ve been told that in today’s world, sex without utilising some kind of ‘barrier method’ can kill you. Let me elaborate: when it comes to sex, I am the barrier, and I will kill you.”

All of which boil down to the tedious, “Boys are threatening louts, sex is awful when other people do it, and my daughter is a plastic doll whose destiny I control.”
