Speaking of feeling so comfortable with old hardware and software that you don't want to move on to the newer stuff, here's today's picture of the day. (I feel like intentionally not including my face like I did yesterday is kind of cheating, so I posed!)

I've got four of these, most of which came from thrift stores and yard sales. I even had a black one once, which I gave to my friend [livejournal.com profile] posicat, who's given me tons of hardware himself over the years. *smiles* It's getting harder to find these, even second hand. I haven't seen one show up at Goodwill or Salvation Army in a long time now.

This one is dated September 28, 1989, making it about 24 years old as I write this. This unit came with a detachable PS2 form factor cord which still connects to my now-aging desktop. If I buy something newer, I'll probably need an adapter to use it, as I think PS2 is pretty much a dead standard.

Lastly, it does, in fact, still work just fine. In fact, I'm writing this on it now! At one point, a cat spilled water on it and a few keys stopped functioning. I was quite happy today when I found that just disassembling the case, removing the keys, and blowing out the inside seems to have revived it!

I put a few more pictures, including some of my oldest keyboard, (Made in 1986, it doesn't even have lights to tell you the status of the lock keys!)

More pictures of the 1989 keyboard:

A few years ago, I disassembled this keyboard, removed all the key caps, and washed them individually. It looked pretty! It may need that treatment again in the future. Plus, I tried at that point to get the schmutz off from near the IBM logo, but didn't have much success.

Pictures of the 1986 keyboard:

This one is dated March 24, 1986, making it 28 years old as I write this. The cable that originally accompanied it is an AT form factor, but newer (or at least less antique) PS2 cables from other Model Ms will work with it.

It's interesting to me that this keyboard has no lock lights; I guess you just have to remember whether you have num lock, caps lock, or scroll lock on.

This keyboard never got the full disassembly and cleaning treatment that the '89 did. To be honest, I'm a little worried about damaging it somehow. I may worry overmuch, but the Model M Archive Project at clickeykeyboards.com has indicated that, as Model Ms go, it's a really early one! It's also in good working order, and I don't want to change that!

What stories these devices could tell!
