Part of what I love about writing history papers is the eclectic citations. I love being exposed to bits of life from a century and a half ago.

My Pike Creek paper references The Water-Cure Journal volume 19(6) from June of 1855, and an 1857 pocket map of Kenosha with the grandiloquent title "Kenosha. Compiled from the Official Records by S. Y. Brande and J. Lothrop Jr." among other things.

I have to check with the professor on a few things, like how to cite what I think is a handbill from 1858 advertising the Kenosha Water-Cure. (I got a digital copy via interlibrary load. The university librarians are awesome!) The newspaper articles from the Southport Telegraph in the 1840s with no headline, no author (it was probably the owner-editor), and no page number are fun too.

I'll be referencing a 1925 comprehensive city plan for Kenosha, done by nationally-known urban planner Harland Bartholomew, as well as a 1935 urban geography master's thesis on Kenosha by a University of Chicago student. The difference in the way people are seeing the city between those two documents - one pre-depression and one post - is fascinating in itself, but I'm not digging into that right now.

A few other things are going to be in there, and I've got a ton of stuff that hasn't made the final cut too. I've really gotten into this Pike Creek history. I'm going to see about writing something up for publication this summer, either in Wisconsin History Magazine, or even in an academic journal. No one has done any research on this topic before!

Ok, time for bed again!
