May. 12th, 2014 05:23 pmI drove to school this morning because I was bringing a few of those Dickens books for the archivist to look at, and because I brought my laptop for a meeting with some students to work on our anthropology theory final. Once I got there, I realized I'd forgotten my phone and the textbook I'd need. With no way to contact them, I drove home after my first class to get my stuff, and drop off the Dickens.
I had a text on my phone saying that one of the three of us couldn't make it, and suggesting we just work on our own. No problem; I'll leave that stuff at home. And since I had enough time, I decided to take my bike back to school. I even took a more meandering route north along the lake shore.
Feeling like seeing something new, I took another different path home, down the old North Shore Line rails-to-trails route for a couple miles, then south along 22nd Avenue (one of the main north/south streets in town). Just as I got back home, the city started a tornado siren test. I kind of felt like I was the recipient of a fanfare at the end of the trip.
My brother T met me at the door and asked me if I could see anything. "Like what?" Like a tornado. He pointed out that tests only happen on the weekends. It hadn't even occurred to me that it might be a real warning! The internet tells me it's not likely to get to the area of the house, but I'll keep alert.
----
My classes are now completely done for the year. I have one in-class final tomorrow, two on Friday, and one take-home due tomorrow which will be occupying most of my evening. My history of urbanization in the US course was rushed at the end, so we kind of hurried through some of the stuff that is of the greatest interest to me. Post-industrial transformation, gentrification, that sort of thing. It's sad. But I have some reading to do on my own on those topics anyway. I'll dig into that over the summer.
I want to say it's a huge relief being done, but that feeling is going to wait until my drive to Chicago after my last final in four more days.
