Back to School!

I'm so tired this evening. I'm not sure why.
Danae had a nightmarish time getting an application for a fellowship together over the past weekend. I was able to offer support while she dealt with that. On Saturday, she also took delivery of a new 'fridge to replace her ailing one, and I was able, with help from her and the internet, get the water line hooked up to the ice maker in it. We weren't sure at first whether the connection was succesful, so the first time I heard the noise of ice being dumped into the bucket, I excitedly jumped out of my chair to go open the freezer and confirm its presence. It reminds me of when my house got a new wash machine, and we all stood around talking and watching it run after we got it connected. It's not that we have not seen these things before; it's just newness. Newness is fun.
On Sunday, a lab mate of hers came over and we had a boardgames and studying day. We all three worked on our respective academic projects, with occasional breaks to play short games of Dominion or Gloom. That was fun, and it worked out really well; I think we will do more of it.
As for me, I spent a little time tonight getting my LED strip transferred to my winter bike, then getting my trailer out of the basement and making sure it's in working order. I'm going to bike to school with it tomorrow and use it to bring home my haul of books. I'm excited about using it for the first time.
I've been reminded by my advisor that I need to present at a poster session with a deadline of the 5th of December for an abstract. This is related to the work we did over the Summer on Pike Creek. I'm also going to submit abstracts for the Association of American Geographers annual meeting (in Chicago this year) as well as the Central States Anthropology meeting in Minneapolis. And the other presentation is in Madison. If I'm lucky, I'm going to get to do some school-related travelling! I *really miss travelling*! My presentations are all going to focus on different aspects of the Pike Creek project. It's fun doing mixed methodology work; I have different aspects I can emphasize in different venues! But I need to get a handle on all the deadlines I'm looking at and make sure I'm on track.
I also need to progress on grad school stuff, and get to work on some papers for my classes. Perhaps the fact that some of my classes really feel more and more like distractions from the academic work I'd like to be doing is one of the best indicators that I'm ready to move on grad school....
So I will, in fact, be at Windycon next weekend. I'm just not sure how much time I'll have there. Still, Friday will be my birthday, and I'm looking forward to spending it at a fun place.
