I just realized that, even though I'm not really supposed to surf non
work-related sites at work, I can still write journal entries by putting
them together in notepad and mailing them to myself for later posting.
So that's what I'm doing at about ten to eight in the morning as I sit
here at my desk in the Ford Atrium Office Center waiting for users to
call in with problems for me to fix. Or at least attempt to fix.
Sometimes I'm more successful than others, but all in all I'm managing to
do decently well.
I was late to work today. My wonderful raccoon gave me a ride to work and
I didn't get there until about 7:30. Up until today, my shift had been 8
to 5 for training, but today I'm starting my 7 to 11 shift. Actually, I'm
working 'till 4 or so today because it's the last day of the quarter and
the help desk is trying to improve their statistics, but I digress. I
was going to explain why my sweetie had to provide transportation to her
puppy dog.
I am pretty sure that my car has finally given up the ghost. It had been
running roughly for a couple months and was having trouble starting when
hot. I pulled off the road to plug in a fuse on the way to fix a loose
wire (my CB radio had stopped working) yesterday and it almost wouldn't
start again. I'd just put oil in it, but I knew it used to have a bit of
a coolant leak so I checked the radiator hoses. They seemed empty so I
figured it was low on coolant. 'I can fix that!' I thought in my
youthful naievtè. As I was leaving school that night, I poured about a
gallon of antifreeze/water mix into the nearly empty radiator and headed
home.
The results were great! The car was suddenly running more smoothly than
it had in months! The shaking while stopped at a red light used to be
quite easily noticable. Now it was almost gone! I thought 'Wow! This is
great! If it's running this well I almost wish that I had held off on
buying that truck."
Then the heater stopped working. I played with the switches, running from
hot to cold, vent to heater to defrost, fan low to fan high; no change. I
could not coax any hot air out of the blower. A few minutes after I began
puzzling over this, I saw a flash of light on the dashboard out of the
corner of my eye. What was this! I kept an eye on the idiot light
cluster and, sure enough, my temperature light began to flicker on and
off. By the time I got home, the light was an unblinking scarlet beacon
and there was steam geysering from the engine compartment. I opened the
hood and found that it looked like coolant had splattered all over the
area around the radiator cap and was boiling off. That was when I wrote that last entry about my car...
Hoping that I had just overfilled it and that it would work if I drained a
little coolant in the morning and tried again. I checked the level in
orning planning to adjust it and found that it was halfway empty driver's
seat, hoping that the Blue Jay woult me around for just another couple
days. Sadly, before I had the old girl this time, but it looks bad.

Now at home, I post this quickly before I head off to pick up Andrea. I got a ride to her office from a friend, one of the other help desk new hires, saw her at the trade exchange, and borrowed her car to wash it and clean it out. I wasn't perfectly effective at either, though they are better now.
She and I are packing up to leave for Wisconsin/Illinois tomorrow to pick up
imandunewen and head for Stronghold faire. And to buy my truck. Woohoo! I'll be wearing my necklace that Andrea made for me herself and bringing my copy of Strange Brains and Genius that she bought for me and presented me with last night. She continues to make me so very happy. I can only attempt to do the same...
