This past weekend was one of the best in recent memory, even mindful of
the fact that I can't quite seem to remember what we did Friday evening.
I think it involved Andrea cooking some really tasty pasta with the
noodles that I walked barefoot over to our local independant grocery
store for. We worked on ebay a little I think, and I went to K-mart to
buy a plastic bin to use as a staging area for stuff that's up for
auction. Oh! Now I remember! Andrea ironed a whole bunch of gorgeous
silk scarves that we're going to be posting as a lot. There are some
really pretty things there including at least one that's certainly hand
painted. One of them also has a tag stating it's place of origin as
occupied Japan. There is so much amazing history and beauty in this bag
that Andrea found being sold for a pittance as rags in a thrift store.
I wish there was some way to learn who painted these and how they got
where we found them.

After sleeping in to a pleasantly late hour, my star and I drove out to
Ann Arbor to hang around in a Bohemian sort of manner for a while. On
the way, we stopped at a couple of thrift stores (of course) and I
picked up a Motorola bag phone that I would, of course, never
try to hack into an analog cell frequency scanner. Our next stop was an
architectural salvage store called Materials Unlimited. Within, we
found some of the most striking windows and doors and other
miscellaneous fixtures I've seen in a long time. The building smells
like the Rhode Opera House (it even had some vintage theatre seats in
the basement) and much of the beautiful stained glass and hand carved
wood is at least that old. There were some massive pieces in
the basement that were salvaged from a church and a Masonic temple that
took my breath away. Of course, nearly everything there is outside of
our price range by a fabulous margin, but it was so pretty to look at
and I felt so lucky to have a person in my life who appreciates the
magic in rescued beauty the same way I do and who shares these special
places with me.

Leaving Materials Unlimited, we returned to a little red trucklet that
wouldn't start. I turned the key and all the little gauges and lights
sprang to life but the engine didn't even try to turn over. After a
period spent despondantly crawling about on the ground under the truck
trying to locate a loose ignition wire or something of the like I
finally collapsed on the seat next to my sweetie. Suddenly my sweetie,
who for some reason keeps telling me how she's not smart or very good
with technology, said "Maybe the gear shift isn't all the way into park.
That happens with old cars sometimes." We were on the road in 30
seconds.

Of course, I now had car goop all over my hands and a smattering of it
on my clothes as well so we stopped at another thrift store to pick up
jeans and a t-shirt. Ended up with a t-shirt that advertises a source
code development environment (Code Warrior) but does so in a way that
looks like an '80s heavy metal band logo. Andrea found this deliciously
ironic.

Not long after we found ourselves in Ann Arbor, strolling along the rows
of shops and having a great time window shopping. Through the course of
the evening we had a wonderful dinner at the Arbor Brewing Company,
bought a book and a couple other knick-knacks at the wonderful
independant book stores that dot the downtown area, and tried very hard
to avoid finding out who won whatever game the college was involved in
that day (it was, apparently, homecoming night). Despite having fun by actively avoide hearing the score, someone
shouted out the numbers as we walked into a store. Oh well.

On our way home, we stopped by the Whole Foods where [livejournal.com profile] laureth
just to say hi in case she was in. I have to go add her to my friends list...

On Sunday we went grocery shopping, stopping at the great big bridge that
goes over 696 outside the Costco where we shop. Andrea and I walked up to the
top of the arch and looked down onto the traffic. She was humoring me; I stopped
on my way home on Friday at another bridge to do the same thing and it seemed like
a really special place. There's something magical for me about being in the middle
of the urban sprawl and at the same time being all alone and unseen. It's a little
secret between the city and those who take the time to look at it; it almost
feels like sacred space. I appreciate Andrea's walking up there with me even if it's
silly.

Over the rest of the evening we made progress on some ebay stuff (I'm hoping to post
a slew of kid's books tonight) and finally sat down to watch movies. Ordinarily I'm
pretty indifferant about tv and movies. Maybe it's just because I never feel like I
have time for them. That night I was really looking forward to spending time watching
something with my sweetie. We put in our disc with Carnival of Souls and Night Tide and
watched both of them back to back. Carnival was a passable Ambrose Bierce plot. Night
Tide was actually really good, I thought. Then it was bed time. I've been getting to
bed right around 10 o' clock so I can be awake at quarter to five for work.

I feel so good after this weekend! I'm going to get moving and get stuff cleaned
up and then I want people to come visit! Who's close enough to visit? [livejournal.com profile] chernabog69? [livejournal.com profile] tinytroll? [livejournal.com profile] crazycatladymel? [livejournal.com profile] thepiercedrose? [livejournal.com profile] sideband? I want to hang out with people! I want to watch movies and play games! I want to show off my heaps of aging silicon! Woo-hoo!

Andrea reminded me of what we did Friday night: we went to see a movie! It had been so long since either or us had been to the theatre. We saw Napoleon Dynamite which was really pretty good. Napoleon reminds me of myself in several rather scary ways. Puppies have very bad memories it seems and I had to clear that up.
