The pinkification of my hardware continues! I got a more pastel pink spray paint than I used for my monitor and bike fender and yes: this is the correct shade. It's called "Candy Pop" or "Éclat de Bonbon". The latter is how I'm going to think of my keyboard. *laughs*

Disassembling the keyboard was more complicated than I expected. The older version of this had a simpler interior construction. This one has some fairly delicate ribbon cable sockets that I was worried about damaging. I ended up just masking over the keyswitches on one side, and over the keys and all on the other.

I decided to mask the entire strip of F keys at the top on each side rather than fiddle with masking the individual keys. I cut the tape to fit against the subtle groove that surrounds the area, and I think the black strips on the pink case will look fine, and will be matching accents to the center rectangle with the logo and model name that I also masked.

It needs another coat of pink tomorrow, then I'm going to do a gloss clear coat over that. Hopefully it will be ready to use in 2 or 3 days! Actually though, it was time to switch over to my Model M anyway (which is why now was the time for the painting project.

The next project is to do my other two 19" IBM / Lenovo monitors.

About asbestos exposure and safety:

When the fire at the condo happened, my 31-year-old Model M keyboard (well, it was 30 at the time) was in the spare room, which was damaged less by fire than most of the condo was. It was still very sooty and smoky, and I think some of the ceiling had collapsed onto the open box it was in, filling it with debris.
I spent a while disassembling it and cleaning it thoroughly out and off and was thrilled to find that it wasn't damaged. I started using it again.

Then Miriam expressed concern that there may be asbestos particulate in the keyboard and that use of it could expose us to asbestos. Our condo was built right at the tail end of the use of asbestos materials in new construction and they did have to do asbestos abatement as part of the demolition (I don't know if that was just SOP with a building of that age or if they knew there was asbestos.)

My immediate thought was that that shouldn't be an issue between the cleaning and the minimal exposure we'd be getting. But in reality, I have no idea if that's the case, and it is definitely a legitimate concern without having more information.

Do any of my readers have knowledge that would help me figure out whether using the keyboard is safe and, if not, what would be required to make it safe? I miss the springy-sprongy and the clicky-clacky!

(Not incidentally, I was working on disassembling and cleaning the video card I salvaged from the computer that was in the condo too. New ones are expensive, and we are going to hit our insurance cap. I stopped because of the same concerns. With the heat sink and fan on it, it does seem like there's be *more* risk of exposure from it, if there's any at all.)

The Kijiji seller with the keyboard didn't get back to me for several days, so I started combing eBay.

I found a keyboard to buy! It's by a company called AUKey. I was not familiar with them, but reviews speak favorably of them as a budget-friendly mechanical switch keyboard maker. AUKey sources their own versions of Cherry MX's keyswitches, which are still rated to 50 million keypresses and are well-reviewed. Mine will have the blue switches, which offer both tactile and audible feedback. Folks say they're quite loud, but I have no issue with that. I bet my Model Ms are louder. It also has adjustable backlighting. I've never had a a keyboard with that before.

I'd rather have had the keyboard with the extra macro keys to be entirely honest, but I think this one will make me happy, at least until I've replaced or repaired a better one.

It was only $30 bucks with shipping. Even as an open-box item, I suspect the reason it was that cheap is that's it's pink. It's very, very pink. And while I really, truly didn't buy it because of the color, there's a part of me that loves how extra it will look on my desk.

Then, today, the Kijiji person finally noticed my message and asked if I wanted his keyboard. I'd still choose it over the pink one because of the macro keys if I hadn't already bought the other, but he missed the boat.

Once upon a time, I bought a cheap music-type keyboard from Goodwill. It came with a folding X-style stand that was fine except it was too short for me. I ended up turning it sideways and securing it with a twist-tie.

A little while back, I ordered myself a nicer keyboard. It's a 61-key MIDI controller with velocity-sensitive keys. I bought the suggested X-style stand with it from the music store. To my surprise, it has the same issue; it's too tall at minium height. I have it turned sidewise and again am using twist ties to keep it from folding up.

I write about this because it just collapsed, and as I worked to secure it up again, I wondered if this is just me being too short for a standard height to work (I'm 5'11" so that seems unlikely), or having bad luck with cheap keyboard stands, or what? If I use the stand as intended, the keys are definitely too high for good ergonomics, and if I sit in a taller chair my feet aren't flat on the floor.

I've been spending a lot of time together with my keyboard but today, for some reason, I was suddenly struck by how very grungy it was. While I did a surface cleaning (except the keys) with paper towels and citrus cleanser, I thought about how long I've owned this thing. The realization that I've been with Danae for about ten years now and that this keyboard significantly predates her bent my brain for a few moments. There are a couple Model Ms that I've owned longer, but I only took one keyboard with me in the move.
I'm thinking about taking all the keycaps off to wash individually and cleaning out all the fur and stuff in the keywells when I have a little extra relaxation time.
