The presidential immunity arguments at the US Supreme Court today:

The fact that the US SCotUS is even listening to this, and that some of the justices seem to think there's any shred of rationality to this at all, is literally enough to make my stomach hurt. The implications of the PotUS having blanket immunity from prosecution are unimaginable. Welcome back to a monarchy.

On the lighter topic of the last post, I remembered a group bike ride I went to in Chicago where many participants were riding topless. People of all genders put tape over their nipples to be in solidarity with people who aren't allowed to expose theirs. I thought it was really great to support equality in that way at the time! I didn't realize how personally that inequality would affect me.

I *really* miss group rides like that, though I wasn't in very many. World Naked Bike Ride was amazing, even though I left early the third year I went. I wish I still had the chance. This is part of why I dearly miss being in a big city.

The developing story about a whistle-blower complaint against Trump is curious, and I'll follow along with the news and see where it goes out of idle interest.

I suspect, though, that no matter what information comes out though, it won't matter much. To his supporters, it doesn't seem to matter a whit what horrible things Trump and people around him do. The fact that the US could potentially reelect someone like Trump is, purely in itself, enough to make me feel like the system we have has fundamentally failed. When so many people could want as purely vile and worthless a human being as Trump in office, it's hard to imagine it getting better in the near future. I just never thought, growing up, that this many people could think and behave in this way. I'm not sure I believe anymore that the moral arc of the USA bends, in the long term, toward justice. It makes me glad to be leaving the country.

At the Goodwill yesterday, Danae saw a Black family (Probably Dad and a couple of kids). The dad put on one of the Trump masks Goodwill is carrying. The kids ran up to him and said "Can I have your autograph?"

The dad said "Go away! I don't like Black people!" Danae laughed with them. I wish I had seen it.

"Nobody knew health care could be so complicated." -Donald Trump

In fact, almost everyone knew that. The President is just thoroughly incompetent.

"“I mean, this is the president of the United States. We have been debating health care in this country for 30 years, and he says, ‘Gee, who knew how complicated it was?’” Sanders said. “He’s maybe the only person in this country who doesn’t know how complicated it is to provide health care for the American people.” -Bernie Sanders, who would have made a damned fine President.

As I just wrote in Facebook, where I blocked a friend of a friend who said that "Muslims should never be allowed into this country."

Every other time I've seen a politician compared to Hitler, it's been pretty ridiculous. Godwin's Law exists for a reason. With Trump, some of those comparisons strike a little closer to the target. His popularity honestly frightens me a little; increasingly so as time progresses and he retains that popularity.

Am I overly worried? How likely do you think it is that he'll be elected? If he is, are we actually going to see the kind of racist policies that he's advocating implemented? Could something like the Japense internment camps of World War II happen again with Muslims?

The things I'm seeing expressed by a lot of people in this country really unnerve me. I think it's more and more important that I, and those who feel as I do, are vocal about that discomfort. Racism and xenophobia should not be socially acceptable under any circumstances. Saying otherwise merits a contradictory response to that effect and quite possibly addition to my blocked list.

These comparisons of Trump to other well known xenophobic leaders are funny at the moment. But they're only funny until they're not. I hope we never get to that point. It still seems really unlikely to me that we will. But unexpected and horrible things have happened in this country before.
