Dear network support:

Re: the issue I've been having getting my mail through the VPN.
What is the status on this?

Joe User

Well Joe, since I left you a voice mail and an email yesterday afternoon and I still haven't heard from you, the status of your issue has, up to now, been 'waiting for your ass to call me and give me all the necessary information that you didn't include in your email'. However, since you couldn't be bothered to return my call or email and are now confused that I haven't psychically determined where in the vast unexplored ether of cyberspace your problem is occurring, your status has been changed to 'down at the bottom of the queue somewhere after the six NT and Exchange accounts I have to create.'

Ok, to be honest, he wasn't at all grumpy about it. I wouldn't have let him linger for too long. Except for the fact that I left him a voice mail and he again didn't call me back. He's lucky I've got so much to do. He called ten minutes after I'm theoretically gone. I troubleshot his connection and will check with the other guy in Chicago tomorrow; I don't know our VPNs well enough yet to solve whatever issue he's having.

Don't get me wrong; I'm rather amused by happenings such as this. The bitterness that seems to pervade so much of the tech support world hasn't set in for me, and perhaps it won't. After working at Ford for six months, the one-on-one end user interfacing is a breeze in comparison. It's a much less stressful environment. Knowing that a machine is continually timing your calls to make sure that you're not spending too long on things, while I did get used to the idea before too long, was not the best stress reduction device in the world.

All in all, I really do like my job, and I'm managing pretty well without my manager at the same location. Hopefully that's not just because nothing really big has come up yet.

My checks arrived a few days ago; stylish and attractive, yet still businesslike and reserved. Wouldn't have been my choice, but they work. They work, that is, apart from the fact that they all say "Christopher Allen Jr. across the top. For those of you who were unaware, I am not a 'junior'. But, I actually got a nice follow up call from Chase bank on the way home and, when I mentioned the issue, they offered to reprint the whole run of them for me. I also talked to our assigned 'personal banker' for a while about where to find a list of no fee ATMs and about doing direct deposit. Though I do wish I could have supported a more local credit union instead of a huge multi-national bank, I can't fault their customer service at all.

After hanging up, I realized that I had returned a call to a professional organization on a personal business matter and went through an entire phone conversation feeling entirely in control and confident. This kind of breaks my brain. Doing phone support really has changed me.

My brother and his girlfriend are coming over to play either Scrabble or some undisclosed console game with me tonight. Yay! I'm going to have next to no spare money from this upcoming paycheck but it doesn't matter; life is good.
