Though I wasn't up to going with for dinner at my parents' house on Wednesday, [livejournal.com profile] moiracoon saved some of her wonderful cheese soup for me. And, even though it had beer in it *giggles*, I sooo love her cheese soup. Especially with the sourdough bread that she bought to go with it just 'cause I like sourdough.

I am married to a really amazing cook who, for some reason, keeps using that talent to feed me. Thank you sweetie.

I love, love things like this.

Oh my god/dess; I just looked more in depth at the Wikipedia article on the Codex Seraphinianus and there's a quote and review by Douglas Hofstadter, who wrote Gödel, Escher, Bach. I feel almost like I felt when I read the Wikipedia article on Raymond Smullyan, who wrote a book of philosophy that is a near dead-on match with my strange world-view, and found that he had done a lot of work as a logician involving refinement of Gödel's incompleteness theorem. These connections between oddities intrigue me. Does it mean something? Smullyan, with his talk about universal synchronicity, would probably respond to that question with a resounding 'maybe'.

I wonder if I can put the Codex on my Amazon wish list; I'd really love to see a copy.

Oh wow!! This sounds like awesome amounts of fun!!

http://www.win.tue.nl/cs/fm/engels/frc/

It's a variant of Nomic (A game which I'd never heard of before today, but it sounds fun in itself. I wonder if I could find people to play at a convention some time; it sounds much more fun than Werewolf!) run on online on a listserv. Check out this excerpt from the website:

This Nomic variant might just be the most intriguing game you will ever find on the net. Coupling creativity and cooperation with logic and deviousness, the players compete to be the last one to submit a valid rule. Rules are valid if they are consistent with themselves, all previous valid rules and a fixed set of regular ordinances. Every new round starts off using just these few regular ordinances, thus prohibiting the ruleset from growing beyond control.

It seems to be an exercise in logic and rule-creation and hair splitting with absolutely no point but the sheer enjoyment of it. Here's a way I can exercise my love of pedantics without pissing anyone off! I think I'll watch the game for a bit and maybe join in the next round.

(It's a quiet Friday here. I'm enjoying it while I can...)

Oooh; and this is an awesome concept! [livejournal.com profile] posicat, what would you say to playing a game of 1000 Blank White Cards with me some time? Maybe Nova would like it too.

Nomic

Ok; I want to start a nomic. I intend to create a new Livejournal community that I moderate to use as the official venue. I have three people who have so far expressed interest: myself, [livejournal.com profile] farm_cat, and [livejournal.com profile] akreaveter. I think that with as small a group as we'll probably have, we don't need a judge and we can vote on proposals and judgment calls ourselves.

Would anyone else be interested in being involved?

I still have some research to so to find an appropriate initial ruleset and a good theme. I like the way Fantasy Rules Committee does it, where rounds are winnable by some defined set of circumstances and the game then resets to a default ruleset.

What do you think? [livejournal.com profile] infintysquared, would you be interested? Are you online at least every couple of days to contribute?

(I was supposed to be doing useful things tonight and instead I spent the whole evening reading about things like happy and sad walruses and other nomic scams. In fact, I had to drive over to my parents house to tell [livejournal.com profile] farm_cat about the emotional walruses because I found the concept so hysterical. [Incidentally, she asked me whether the happy ones had buckets and the sad ones did not. I love her.] I am not sorry.)
