Some people spend years trying to find themselves. It only took me a few days.

My graduation occurred in 1998, it seems. So, my transcript should be on its way to me today. Progress.

In the meantime, I'm trying to be a useful, productive employee. Every day, I sit down at my desk in the morning and think, 'I'm going to do a good job today'. I wish it was possible for me to feel like I really did. Instead, I feel like a leech. But I'm trying.

I had a lovely evening out with [livejournal.com profile] moiracoon last night. We tried out the Mongolian grill place here in town, something called huHot. It was good; it reminded of the good BD's franchises we went to in Michigan. On our second trip, we each made a bowl for the other. The one I made was too bland for her. This is probably because I can't cook for squat. But I tried! The one she made, kind of a creole-ish thing with spicy sausage, fake crab meat, beans, and lots of heat, was nummy!

And then I took her out for a kid-size ice cream at Coldstone. I wasn't going to have one myself, but the smell changed my mind. I forgot how intoxicating the scent of all that ice cream and candy is! I also decided that, for my birthday, I need to have one of every cake and cookie in the freezer there. Except for the strawberry and coffee ones. *woofs*

I've picked up my Rubik's Cube from last Christmas again and have reminded myself how to solve the first two layers, which is actually pretty easy once you know the steps. I now know just enough to borrow kids' cubes, solve all but the last layer, and hand it back to them, saying 'I left the easy part for you!'. *giggles* Why does that sound like something from the David Sedaris book I'm reading?

Speaking of which, I'm most of the way through When You Are Engulfed In Flames, the first of his books I've read. (My dad got me a signed copy on one of his trips with his theatre department! Thanks [livejournal.com profile] barton_fender!) I know a lot of people think Sedaris is hysterically funny. I think I probably don't have the right background for the proper appreciation. He's amusing generally, and there were one or two bits that stand out as really damned funny, but for the most part it wasn't an experience that stands out in my mind. Good, not great.

Mechanic Juan should be looking at Moira's car, and maybe even mine, this Saturday. Currently, hers won't run at all, and mine needs a tie rod and a tire before going anywhere outside of town. Well, we'll get it taken care of, one way or another. I know I can supposedly do a tie rod myself, but it makes me nervous and I'd much rather have Juan work his magic on it.

I've got all the decent pictures from my trip to MCS in 2004 up. I think I'll post some from my trip there with [livejournal.com profile] rileybear67's husband, D. I was certain that I had some from a trip there with [livejournal.com profile] posicat too, but I couldn't find any! I was worried I'd lost or misplaced them somehow, but as I kept thinking about it, I realized that maybe I didn't have a camera that time. I'm so used to carrying one with me all the time that I just assume that, if I've gone somewhere interesting, I have pictures of it somewhere.

Me, a little over five years ago

Self-portrait on the Roof

I remember this guy!

Yes, that's me, a little over five years ago at this point. I look mostly the same still, though I have better glasses now. I was in here alone, but I just had to have a picture of myself on my first excursion into a big abandoned building. I found a ledge to rest the camera on. I'm crouched over a bit out of fear that someone would see me on the roof and call the police or something.

The clouds were so beautiful that day!

Saying Goodbye for a While: Michigan Central Station Against the Clouds

Saying Goodbye for a While - Michigan Central Station Against the Clouds

At the end of April, 2005, Moira and I were on our way to the wilds of Wisconsin with the last of our remaining possessions from the apartment in Warren we'd just moved out of. We both decided to drive through some of the more abandoned areas of Detroit on the way out for photo ops, and then proceed west along US-12 through the Irish Hills.

We had to stop, of course, at Michigan Central Station, a building that I feel personally attached to to a strange degree for one who isn't a Detroit native. And one that I wouldn't be seeing again for quite some time.
============================

Or maybe this is my favorite shot of MCS I've taken. The station was pretty dark in this one and it needed a little Photoshop help, but it sure came out nicely with a little selective brightening.

I've been thinking about our last move, back in 2005, as we come up to this next one, which will probably again be in April. This, at least, will be around five-hundred miles less to haul all of our stuff.

==========

Fixing my camera is going to be a little pricy. I don't have the money for it right now, but when I do, I'll have to think about the choice between repairing my 20D, or maybe buying a used 40D. I saw one for a surprisingly good price on Craigslist a while ago, and I think I could get a deal if I keep my eye on them. In the meantime, it at least works and isn't lost, and I can get by with that.

And now to pack up more of my computer room. I might get to sorting out what games stay and which will go on our board game shelf in the basement too!
