It's good to have started moving some books to my living space. Even though I don't really have any bookshelves as such.

It's weird to be living without a dog, and without a lot of books around. But the latter is much more easily addressed, and I now have a big bag of books waiting to be sorted onto closet shelves.

Popular science books like Richard Morris' 'Achilles in the Quantum Universe'. Photography books like 'How to Photograph People' and 'Erotique Digitale'. My illustrated copy of Peter Beagle's 'The Last Unicorn'. My copy of 'The Complete Dictionary of Symbols'. My Japanese Dictionary. The monograph my great-grandfather wrote on concrete construction (which I can find listed in citations when looking in Google, but I can't find the actual text of or a link to a description of). And even a couple things like my copy of 'A Hundred Strokes of the Brush Before Bed' and 'Only the Ring Finger Knows'.

My little treasures are coming back to me.

I'm a registered member of the American Anthropological Association. Also, since I was required to choose an internal section, I'm also a member of the Society of Lesbian and Gay Anthropologists (which seems, according to their website, to include bi and transgendered people). I figured that whether I'm solidly in their userbase as a bisexual or not, I'm more than happy to support them.

The person I talked to at the society was very helpful and suggested I register for the cheaper associate membership which I wasn't sure if I was eligible for or not instead of the professional one. He even gave me his phone number to give him a call in case I have any trouble. Nice guy!

I have also registered to attend the yearly meeting in New Orleans. Now I have to figure out what programming to attend. I have to admit, I'm a little bit worried that I will lack sufficient background frame of knowledge to appreciate some of it. Maybe I can look at what sounds interesting, and then use my membership in the AAA to explore their online resources to do some reading and studying on the topics I want to know more about. I'm not sure what all is available that way, but I hope to have fun finding out!

Finally, using some good basic flashcard software I found free on the internet, I have a set of 111 Japanese words to work on learning on my laptop. I'll go through those as I take the L in to the Loop today to my class.

Which I need to leave for in about ten minutes, so I should probably get my stuff together.

But lastly, as I've listend to NPR's pledge drive today, and they keep talking about how they need to get over 9000 members this drive, I can't help but find this silliness continuing to come to mind.

I dropped my laptop while sitting at the train station this afternoon as I waited for a train into Chicago. Now it's not recognizing input from the keyboard. I borrowed a USB keyboard from [livejournal.com profile] jimcyl this evening, but it's not working either. I'll have to see if swapping in a replacement keyboard at work on Monday will help. Until then, I guess I'm using my desktop.

I'm a little bit stressed and down this evening. I think I'd concentrate on doing some Japanese studying, but my flashcard program is on the laptop and I realized that I'd left my workbook at my parents' place while I was there.

Maybe I'll just lie down and do some reading.
