Aug. 16th, 2012 03:40 pmI'm disappointed with my bank for not being willing to call another financial institution, even though it was overseas, to work on getting a wire transfer to go through successfully. So I'm comparing rates at other institutions as I think about where to move my account. I don't have enough money to make any large amount of interest, but I would like to stay around my current rate of 1% APY on my checking account rather than going somewhere like the place I used to be (Chase) where I got .01%. And that was on my *savings* account!
I'm going to go and talk to someone there first about whether I'd get better service from them than my current bank before actually changing, but I'm definitely annoyed enough to want to make the effort of looking elsewhere.
The rewards checking account that I have is only available in Wisconsin. It's a holdover from when my bank was a local Southeast Wisconsin bank before it went bankrupt and was bailed out by the FDIC (big government is good sometimes!) and taken over by a Michigan bank. I looked at my bank's website to check actual rates: they are listed for regular checking accounts, but in the spaces that are supposed to have the rates for my kind of account, there are just blanks. Maybe they don't want their other customers to know what kind of rates they offer in Wisconsin? Their other accounts offer on the order of .05%, so there's quite a difference. In fact, when I first opened this account, I was getting 5.01% APY. That was really nice, especially given that I had rather more money in the account at that point! It's kept sliding down over the years....
