Aug. 21st, 2012 01:14 pmI've been largely away from social networking (Facebook and G+) for a while and haven't really missed it. I need to evaluate and change the way I use them, because right now I waste a lot of time reading things and don't get a lot out of it. I may restrict my reading list to just a few people who I want to be sure I'm keeping up with. I got a lot done and felt good about that, and I want to feel that way more often.
I've done a lot of bicycling, and have found that my knee isn't hurting. This makes me very happy! I went riding with Andy yesterday. He set a slower pace than I'm used to. That's good, 'cause I learned that when I'm not pushing myself as much as I usually do, I can go 16 miles and still feel pretty rested. He and I are talking about biking regularly in the mornings. It will have to wait a bit though. When we got back to my house, I inflated his rather low tires up to full. Fifteen minutes or so later, the group of us were all getting ready for my brother's Shadowrun game and we heard a muffled sound like thin glass crashing into a wall. It turned out that one of his inner tubes had popped. Since he is another of the ranks of unemployed, I'm giving him a ride to his usual date at the plasma center tomorrow before he can replace the tube.
I had a wonderful weekend with Danae here in Kenosha. The two of us went to a party hosted by my anthropology advisor. She, my other anthro professor, and a group of mixed alumni and current students were also in attendance. I was kind of nervous about going and talking to a large group of mostly people I didn't know, but I was excited to. And it was a nice time. I did a pretty good job of chatting with folks and had a conversation with my archaeology professor about my trip through Illinois and things to see in Springfield. At the end of the evening, we even ended up playing a game of Cards Against Humanity with my advisor and a group of others. I won one round where the prompt was "In a world ravaged by ___, our only hope is ___" with "God" and "sniffing glue", and only felt a *little* bad about myself. *grins*
Danae and I also went shopping at Big!Lots. She'd never been to one, so I got to introduce her to the random array of furniture, electronics, personal care products, and discontinued energy drinks that I like to wander through from time to time. I didn't buy the $8 charger to replace the missing one for my cell phone, which was good since I actually found mine the next day hiding under my desk. But my kitty found a desk chair for herself, and then the two of us had Mexican food at Tacos El Norte, a place I really like and haven't eaten at in years. Afterward, we dropped into Tenuta's where she got some of the same cheese we'd taken to the party, 'cause it was so good we wanted more. It's a cheddar made from raw, unpasteurized milk. It wasn't aged, but it was very sharp and tasted like a strong, years-old cheddar. I was really glad Tenuta's was offering samples on Saturday, 'cause I think it's become one of my favorites! Especially at only $12 or so a pound.
I got to see No-LJ-James when he stopped by to see my dad. We were talking about Dominion, and he decided he needed to go to Rockhead's to pick up a copy of Prosperity to play with Tim and Andy and I. We played a couple games at the shop, and before leaving he bought himself a copy of Dominion too! He says the person he's moving in with is a big board gamer, so maybe there'll be some visits and board games in our mutual futures. It would be nice to see more of him.
I picked up more shirts at Goodwill on a trip with Andy, and now have a very nice red flannel long sleeve for the Fall, as well as a Hawaiian-style maroon polo with gray and beige leaf-designs. It's nice to have a selection of shirts that I picked out and really like. I think more thrift store shopping and closet culling is in my future. Danae and I were going to go through my clothing with an eye toward making some room, but we didn't quite get to it. Next time!
